Just last week, a kind elderly gentleman waiting to be seated before me at one of my favourite restaurants in Austin did a double turn when he saw me. I smiled politely because I knew he was going to say something like “Haven’t I seen you before” or “You look like someone I know”. But then he made me smile even harder as he exclaimed without hesitation, “LATIKA!”
It’s been 14 years since Slumdog Millionaire premiered worldwide and a lot has changed except for the fact that I’m still recognized as Latika. Latika will always be a part of me and I couldn’t have been more grateful for the jumpstart Slumdog gave me.

Diwali is such a special part of my childhood. For years with travel and work, I was pulled away from the traditions and celebrations of this joyous festival. But this year with Rumi in my life I took a much required pause and brought on some parts of the festivities to our home. It was emotional and heartwarming celebrating with my family and friends. Cannot wait to keep doing this year after year. Happy Diwali! 🎇 Austin, Texas

My @rookiewellness launch day is here! This one excites me so much because it’s all about our Health! If there’s one thing we have learned from the last 2+ years of turmoil and uncertainty in our world then it is that our health and wellbeing cannot be taken for granted. Starting the day right knowing that I am nourished and energized is just as important as knowing that I am going to bed to have deep restful and restorative sleep. So here’s to claiming our health without compromise. No icky additives and fillers just the cleanest ingredients. For those who know me well, you know that I will never consume ingredients that I don’t recognize as safe or cannot pronounce🤣 My favourite is the chocolate protein powder…And I want to share some with you with this 15% discount code Freida when you purchase from the Rookie website.
Happy Health to you all!
The excitement is real! I can’t wait to share this little secret with you. Stay tuned…more to come tomorrow. 🙂
On October 28, my little Rumi-Ray turned 1! My instinct was to stay present and savour every minute of the feeling, celebrating and holding tight to the milestone. Celebrating the incredible growth Rumi has gone through, the adventures the three of us as a family have been through, and completing my first year of being a mother.
We spent the weekend away with the family around the campfire. I tried my hand at baking a “smash cake” which turned out not to be very smash-able… but alas maybe next year I’ll give it another go. Rumi’s gorgeous great-grandmother introduced us to Thoi Noi (a Vietnamese first birthday tradition), where little Rumi gleefully went straight for the tennis ball, tried his luck with the calculator, and pivoted to the ruler but decided on a computer mouse and calculator combo. Maybe that was his way of telling us – I have many interests and I am dynamic. I like that for Rumi.
I was so grateful my wonderful sister @sharonfpinto (Rumi’s godmother) and my parents were able to come from India to join us in celebrating. @preetidesai (also Rumi’s godmother) kept us all in splits with her wicked sense of humour. @coryt wonderful parents, aunt, and cousins were all there to bless this lucky little boy who gets to boast of being part Indian, part American, and part Vietnamese. For the icing on the cake… Rumi and I got to romp around in our matching PJs (a tradition I will continue as long as he will let me).
My heart is so content and I wanted to share a little piece of my happiness with all of you.

I spy… my boys!
Couldn’t have asked for a more special birthday’s eve yesterday. I got to fly to New York to celebrate my dear friend @humaabedin with @michaelkors and Anna Wintour awarding Huma the @godslovenyc Golden Heart Award for Outstanding Leadership! Founded as a response to AIDS, the New York-based food and nutrition organization now serves people living with more than 200 different diagnoses. They’ve been cooking and delivering custom meals to individuals living with severe and chronic illnesses since 1985.
I got an opportunity to learn about how this organization has not only been tackling food scarcity but also applying intelligent food science to the meals they provide. As we get closer and closer to all the wonderful holidays ahead of us starting with Diwali next week I feel so lucky to be able to share delicious and nourishing foods and sweet treats with my family and community. May we always consider those that they may not be able to access this basic need the way we can and find ways to share a little of ours with them as well. New York, New York

Things looked a lot different around here a year ago today… Looking back at these photos and reminiscing these sweet baby in the belly days. But I also love exactly where we are today. And when I reminisce the days that have gone by, my heart feels so full and I am content. Life is such a beautiful thing. We can’t turn back time or get lost in thoughts of the future. The Here and Now is so precious and beautiful. And equally beautiful are the memories that have been made. What a blessing it is to be a Mother!
– dedicating this post to all the soon to be mamas.
