There are few people who have done more to influence generations of Americans than my friend and mentor, Marian Wright Edelman. I was thrilled to help honor her at @smithsoniannpg last weekend.
Marian has spent over six decades making life better for poor children and their families across the country.
It would also be impossible to overstate Marian’s impact on my own life.
I first met Marian when I was a first-year law student and heard her speak at Yale. She was the first African American woman to pass the Mississippi bar, was fighting for voting rights with the NAACP, and had opened a Head Start program for children in the Mississippi Delta who desperately needed it. She sat with Robert Kennedy in a shack in the Delta, opening his eyes to the realities of poverty in America. She joined Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign, dreaming of an America of equality and opportunity. And she created the Children’s Defense Fund to be a strong voice for poor children, children of color, and children with disabilities.
Hearing her talk about her work changed my life. I went up to her afterwards and I said, “I’d like to work for you this summer.” I wanted to learn from her—and what an education it was.
For Marian, it has always been about children and families.
She helped to open public schools to children with disabilities in the 1970s, an effort I was honored to be part of. She worked to expand Medicaid in the 1980s to cover more pregnant women and more children in need. She stood with me and others in the 1990s to create the Children’s Health Insurance Program, improve foster care, and create Early Head Start. She fought to build a bipartisan movement to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline and reform our criminal justice system. And she’s spent countless hours mentoring the next generation of activists.
She has given children all over this country the opportunity to live up to their God-given potential, and we are all the grateful beneficiaries of her noble and necessary mission. Thank you, Marian, and congratulations. #PortraitOfaNation

There is great power when women come together and demand action. I was honored yesterday to help launch a campaign called “Eyes on Iran”– a multimedia art activation in the shadow of the United Nations to make sure the public does not forget or ignore the brutal crackdown on Iranian women and girls.
We also call on the United Nation member states to match the courage of Iranian citizens and remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women.
A country that systematically abuses the rights of women and girls has no place participating in a Commission whose purpose is to protect those rights. Every day that Iran remains a member of that Commission, the body loses credibility.
We know that removing a country from the Commission on the Status of Women is unprecedented. But so is a revolution led by women and girls.

Good luck to Team USA in today’s #worldcup match! Here’s a throwback to Bill and me cheering on teams at Soldier Field in Chicago when America hosted the tournament in 1994.
Wishing you and yours a happy and delicious Thanksgiving!
