Entertainment or Enlightenment?
Yesterday ( 15th Oct 2022) I witnessed my first ever Kathakali performance!
“Ohh really?” “How come?” “What rubbish!”.
Unfortunately, yes.
Inspite of being a Malayali, my connection to kerala has been very limited.
I do know to read, write and speak Malayalam (the metropolitan way of course). I also know Vishu, Onam, thiruvathira, etc. (Again the metropolitan versions). But never done the typical way. A half-baked Malayali. So I never miss an opportunity to get a feel of anything that makes me feel a little more connected to my roots.
Yesterday was one such day, rather evening.
I have heard stories on how Kathakali is practised, perfomed and it’s impact, but never witnessed one.
First impression: Why haven’t I ever had the opportunity to watch this before?
Final thoughts (teary eyed) : I wasn’t ready for THIS feeling. That’s why !
I don’t know about the artform, but after yesteday I wanted to even be a Kathakali artist. That’s how much it impacted me.
I realised how greedy I am as an artist, how jealous I was of the way the artist on stage could make me feel. I wanted that power. I wanted to dictate the crowd. Rule the space.
All negative words had a positive impact.
That’s what ART does, I realised.
That’s what the ARTIST in me wants to do, I decided.
I can’t even speak of the artwork I witnessed as I don’t feel I am literate enough to do so. It was mesmerizing. Thank you 🙏
They were from KALAMANDALAM. If anyone knows the artists help me tag them please.
