Caption : Adding my voice to all those who are today wishing Aamir Khan a very happy 60th B’day. I first met Aamir in 1997/8 for Earth (in India it was called 1947 Earth…we like to spell out things! I think it is one of his finest performances. Even though he betrays me in the film (spoiler!), we really got along and our friendship continued. Soon after, he was keen for me to do a film with him. I am sure the director, and producer were unhappy with the choice! This dark girl who had done films like Fire and Hazaar Chaurasi ki Maa for this big commercial film. No way! But who could say no to Aamir! I too wqs not keen at all as films wasn’t something that I was serious about. But as Aamir wqs, a photoshoot was organised where I was made to look fairer than him! 😅🤦🏽♀️ After that I was sure I didn’t want to do the film! Even when I meet them all today, we laugh about it! I am sure when they see this photo, it will bring a smile to their face. But Aamir, thanks for your trust in me. We have met here and there since. And at 60 Aamir remains a grounded man full of wonder and dreams. May all your dreams come true and may you always dream wisely! 😜 Hope you had a great day! 🤗🤗Likes : 22897

Caption : Sadly missing Cannes this year. Sometimes people seem to forget that it is a festival of films and not of clothes! Considering I can’t show you the amazing films I watched or the conversations I have had or take you back in time when Manto premiered there. Here are a few images through the years in Cannes. And only the ones in Saris as there is a fair amount of chatter about the ‘celebrities who wore saris in Cannes’. Well it is surely my go-to garment. Simple, elegant and Indian. Least fussy – easy to get in and get out of it! Each of the images have an interesting story behind it but too long to share. So feel free to make up your own story from the photos you see. And guess the year they are from – 2005, 20013, 2016-2018! @festivaldecannes #sarees #mantoLikes : 19979

Caption : It’s been 15 years since Before the Rains was released in India and longer since it premiered at the @tiff_net. It was a memorable experience to shoot with @sivan_santosh and the cast – @rahulbose7, #linusroache and others. Through such films I have seen so many hidden gems of India. This was shot in Munnar in Kerala and stunningly by Santosh who has a very unique lens through which he sees his images, his characters and his story unfold. If you haven’t see the film and want to, then check it out on @primevideoinLikes : 16295

Caption : Most likely you already know that Shyam Benegal is no more. You should also know that with him an era has ended. He waited to go till he met many of his loved ones on his 90th birthday, just a week ago. Sadly I wasn’t in town so missed that last smile, hug and warmth. What I want to share is what a wonderful human being he was. I spent last 2 hours talking about him to some of the people who knew him well. We mourned only for a bit as we didn’t want to be selfish. He lived a full life, and just when his health began to suffer more, he left to rest in peace. All we talked about was how kind and generous he was. How present he was with everyone he met. Always making us feel special. Always responded to emails and messages. Memories of so many interactions with him came flashing back. Just 2 days after Zwigato was streaming on Amazon, he watched it and emailed me with such praise and encouragement. I was one of the million people he cared for. I will miss his laugh, his firm loving hug and his twinkling eyes. I always felt like a student who was eager to learn though he would never claim to be a teacher. His wisdom was effortless. I, like so many others, grew up on his films. They helped us be who we are. They informed us, created empathy and challenged our prejudices. Made us think and feel and care about the world we lived in. He made us better human beings. I am so fortunate to not only have worked with him in Hari Bhari, a lesser known film of his, but also for having known him for more than 3 decades. Shyam babu, as we all lovingly and respectfully called you, you will always be with us through your films, your laughter and your wise and kind words. Pardon my ramble, but want to just be with you and remember so many lovely and lively times I got to spend with you. The world, my world, will never be the same. One doesn’t have to even meet often. Some people’s existence just gives us hope. Your contribution has been immense. A life fully lived. Now you rest.Likes : 10474

Love the old world charm of heritage saris and jewellery from the precious collection of @meerakumar75, a dear friend. I seldom do formal photoshoots, and now after a gap of two years I’ve done two in two months! @theindiantextilescoLikes : 10216

Many of their stories found their way into the script. The family is very dear to me. The journey of making Manto impacted me so deeply that I wrote an entire book. My one and only yet. It chronicles the journey of making the film. But it is more than that. Wish I could narrate it in an audiobook. I would love to live that time again! PS. Sorry Manto Sahab and Safia bibi for referring to you both by your first name, but then, I knew you as my characters first! Hope you liked seeing yourself in Nawaz and Rasika! I sure did. Caption : It seems like my post about Cannes has sparked an unintended debate! It’s amusing how a spontaneous sharing of thoughts and throwback images was perceived to be ‘a dig’! Pointing fingers is a pointless exercise. Things are often more nuanced than we think they are. At such events, men have far less pressure about how they look. They can repeat their tuxedos, and no one will know or care. Whereas women have a much greater burden of looking beautiful, sexy, regal, stylish, stunning, unique etc. etc. Blaming them is overlooking the role each of us plays in perpetuating this disproportionate pressure. The celebrities, the festival, the media and us viewers and readers…we are all complicit. Please read my posts for what they are and not what you think is between the lines! I dislike sitting on judgement just as much as I don’t like to be judged for my choices. Nuances are often lost in short-form communications. For instance, I should not have written that the festival is about films because it is also about conversations and collaborations between filmmakers, storytellers, producers, technicians and film lovers. That was between the lines! A lot of the festival happens outside the Palais, in the informal spaces – in cafes and lobbies and on the Croisette and streets of Cannes. Over the years I have met some incredible minds and made friends that are going to last a lifetime. There is a reason why such events are called ‘festivals’. And in festivals, people are meant to wear festive clothes! As long as we don’t limit ourselves to it or obsess about it, we are doing justice to such experience. I have never had a PR or a personal photographer. So here are some more Cannes candids with people I cherish, meeting and knowing. And memorable events like when 82 women who had a film in Cannes, walked the red carpet, demanding gender parity. @festivaldecannes #filmfestivalLikes : 8197

Caption : I am still unable to fathom, let alone express the loss I feel at the sudden demise of Irrfan and Rishiji. Just too shocking and sad. Having worked with both I can vouch that they were not only brilliant actors but also amazing human beings. I worked with Irrfan in Supari many years ago and I still remember the conversations we had. His brilliance has left a deep impact on me. And Rishiji’s generosity, humour and warmth are still so fresh in my mind. I am sharing a short excerpt about him that I wrote in my book, Manto and I : I have enjoyed many performances by Rishi Kapoor over the years, but while casting, there was no character that I instinctively felt would befit him. I reached out to him at the behest of one of the producers, asthey felt his presence would attract more audiences. So, they fixed a meeting with Rishiji. It was strange to meet him without knowing which role I was goingto request him to do. The minute I entered, he warned me, “I don’t do guest appearances anymore.” But I only had a guest appearance to offer. I candidly confessed that my reason for wanting his support was that his talent andpopularity would help the film reach a wider audience. As I began reading outpart after part, I was hoping to find the one that would be the right fit. He must have been shocked by my audacity! To my surprise, he generously agreed to do the ‘guest appearance’ of a sleazy producer. He had seen many of them in his earlier days and was happy to recreate the character with me. So, there he was on the sets of Manto. A seasoned actor, he gave his all, even for the six-hourshoot. I hope to do more justice to his talent and stature in a future film.’ When I wrote that, I didn’t imagine that there would never be another film with him. I will treasure both their messages, and of course their memories. They will be missed sorely. #rishikapoor #irrfankhanLikes : 7773
