Will Poulter Instagram – In the spirit of the Underground Railroad, Rainbow Railroad’s @rainbowrailroad mission is to help persecuted LGBTQI individuals travel to safety as they seek freedom from state-enabled violence. Around the world, 70 countries criminalize same-sex intimacy, and many more have other laws that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In 11 countries, same-sex intimacy can be punishable by death. In too many countries, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex (LGBTQI ) people are routinely arrested, denied basic human rights, and are being brutally attacked, tortured or even murdered. Meaning LGBTQI refugees and asylum seekers are among the most vulnerable populations. Since 2006, Rainbow Railroad supporters have helped provide life-saving assistance to over 3,100 LGBTQI individuals. In 2021 alone, Rainbow Railroad helped 1,808 people from over 30 countries seek safety, including providing direct travel assistance to a record 206 individuals.
