Most people assume I read sheet music. I don’t. I play basic piano… enough to write songs and jam with my band, but that’s about it. I’ve been wanting to learn how to read sheet music and play piano… I mean REALLY play piano, for a long while. And finally, I committed. “Better late than never.” This is clunky as all hell, and far from perfect. But it’s one of my favorite songs from “Spirited Away.” Maybe as you listen, you can think about what you’ve been putting off that excites you. Better late than never. ❤️ (Please ignore my bizarre facial expressions. It’s out of my control.) 😅Thank you @silverlakepiano for being the best teacher ever! I had a talk with our producer yesterday. I told him that I had felt burnt out before, but now, I feel excited again. “I think I kinda stopped caring about this album, because… when I care, I care A LOT. And caring hurts. Caring about something can break your heart, and I’ve had my heart broken many times before.” If you start to love something and get excited about it and put all of you into it, it can let you down. So, for a minute there, I subconsciously decided not to care as a form of protection. I do this in my relationships. In my life. But, not caring also hurts. And it’s cowardly. And not to get too dark but, a teacher of mine used to talk about “Last time-ness.” Doing something as if it’s the last time you’ll ever get to do it. There’s poetry in that. The last time you get to act in a scene with your scene partner. The last time you kiss someone you love. The last time you get to drink a cup of your favorite coffee. The last time you’ll sing a song for someone. Or the last album you’ll get the opportunity to make. That sat with me. If this is my last time, what do I want to say? No, what do I need to say. I’ve decided to care. A lot.

A friend asked me how writing was going recently. I thought about it for a moment and answered, “Well, it was really really really bad and frustrating and confusing. And then it was good.”
Fight through your “first draft.” Fight through the beginning stages where you haven’t quite found your footing yet. The days where you work from sun up to sun down and have nothing to show for it except a mess of lyrics that don’t make sense.
Fight through beginning something, cause just beyond that… is the magic.
