I had an incredible time re-making songs for #RedTaylorsVersion with @taylorswift — and it was sooooo much fun watching the super talented @blakelively direct us all in the video for “I Bet You Think About Me”. Congratulations to @taylorswift on the release of her version of Red… as always I’m so amazed by your courage and determination as an artist and I’m so grateful for our friendship and collaboration. I had the great pleasure of producing four songs on the record with Taylor: Better Man, Run, Nothing New and I Bet You Think About Me. I love each of these songs so much and I’m so thankful to Taylor for trusting me to help do them justice as she reinterprets and reclaims her past. It was also an honor and surreal to get to work with her incredibly talented guests @teddysphotos, @chrisstapleton, and my old tour comrade @phoebebridgers, who each added so much heart to these songs… and once again I had help from many friends, especially my brother @brycedessner who added beautiful orchestration recorded with the @lcorchestra . These songs have that intimacy and vulnerability. I’m so thankful our paths crossed and can’t wait to share more music Gracie and I have made. I’m so excited for you all to finally hear “Carolina”, a hauntingly beautiful song @taylorswift wrote, based on @authordeliaowens’ incredible novel “Where the Crawdads Sing”, and which will feature in @crawdadsmovie, a forthcoming movie based on the book. It’s one of my favorite songs Taylor has written and it was an honor to help her record and produce it. We played old acoustic instruments and channeled the eery beauty of the North Carolina marsh where the story is set. It sounds fittingly like this recording could have been made a long time ago. @indigosparke is an incredible singer and songwriter from Australia who I met through our old friend @bstosuy …She came to visit me at Long Pond a few times over the last 18 months and we made one of my favorite records I’ve ever been a part of (more on that later). The first single we made is called “Pressure in my Chest” and is out today ….I find getting lost in this song very cathartic ….go have a listen! I recorded the music for June’s a River the same day that I recorded “Birch” – both to beats that @postmoderndrummer had sent me, and both at a time when I was feeling pretty down. The music feels evergreen and meditative to me and I found myself getting lost in the circular melody for hours on end. My brother @brycedessner played guitar to this song fairly early, leaning into and harmonizing the melody. I had the pleasure of collaborating with @benhoward_ on his recent incredible record Collections from the White Out — and he arrived at Long Pond from overseas one night when I was working on this music. He sat quietly on the couch writing and then asked if he could sing something. Ben sang in these words on the first take that night, exactly as they are now. It was stunning to see a song magically appear this way and again this is why I make Big Red Machine music: the unexpected musical chemistry you find with friends in the moment. Kate Stables (@thisisthekit) later added her beautiful voice to the song with me in the Gaite Lyrique in Paris. In my mind Kate and Ben come from similar musical places and remind me of each other, two of my favorite musicians, so it made me so happy to hear them together on this record. Listen to @bigredmachineadjv’s ‘Easy to Sabotage (feat. @naeem)’ and watch the new video directed by @michaelbrowndesign at the link in my bio. I made the original music for Easy to Sabotage in a hotel room in Chicago during the National’s Easy to Find tour in 2019. And BRM jammed this song… which is built around a riff that is fun to play over and over… multiple times in 2019. We recorded the performances at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn and the Hollywood Palladium and I was able to combine the bootlegs with studio recordings to make this song, sort of like a latter day Grayfolded. @naeemjuwan later added his incredible verses which somehow feel like they were always meant to be woven with @blobtower’s live vocals. @james_krivchenia, @jt_bates_ and @jasontreuting all contribute drumming and @arsononly added processing. Easy to Sabotage reminds me of the exhilaration and freedom of performing BRM songs live, which hopefully we will get to do next year some.
