Carlo Traversi Instagram – When climbing competitions are at their best they serve as a venue for discovery. Whether it’s newfound inspiration from those around you, an extra level of try hard you never knew you had, or the chance to really see how you perform under pressure. Competition is and always will be essential in bringing out the best in us.
In 2019, after nearly 15 years of competing as a professional climber in everything from raucous local events to World Championships in Europe, I began to get a bit disillusioned with the formats by which we play the game. In response, we launched The Boulder Field Masters Series @tbfmasters where particularly for the OPEN/PRO categories we radically altered the formats to allow for some of the most interesting and entertaining competition climbing that has ever happened. It was experimental, it was stressful, and it was some of the most fun I’ve had in a gym in a long time.
Finally, now in 2023, we’re back. Next week @theboulderfield will be hosting The Greatest Flasher which is the first comp in the Series. This format is particularly exciting as OPEN competitors will only get 1 try per boulder in both the Qualifiers and Finals round. Flashing a boulder is the ultimate challenge. You only get one first attempt. In the quest for climbing perfection, there’s no better test. Who will be The Greatest Flasher 2023?
