When we were 14 years old and I saw you perform for the first time in drama class, I couldn’t take my eyes off of you. When we’d run your lines for Shameless I’d be so tickled knowing before hand what everyone would get to witness the next day on set. When I watched the pilot for The Bear, I cried my fucking heart out. I think somewhere I must’ve known how much life was about to change, but mostly I just knew that the world was about to discover what I’ve known all along. What a privilege it’s been to know first. I love this picture so much because you look 14 and 31 at the same time- watching you win on Tuesday was one of the most overwhelming dimension hopping moments of my whole life, watching you win last night while holding our two babies was pretty out of this world too.

Happy birthday to the ultimate dad, protector, husband and friend. Thank you for making our kids feel safe enough to be so brave. Thanks for not letting us go out to sea with all of our big feelings and small catastrophes. You do that all of the time. I can’t believe how much life we’ve done in 31 years, how we’ve had more life together than apart, how old we feel for being so young. There’s so much to be proud of and to look forward to, I’ll be here to remind you of that for the rest of your life. Today is the day The Bear comes out of the brilliant minds and open hearts and onto your tv screen. It is always a privilege to witness the work Jeremy puts in and the result will always take my breathe away. “Dolores I live in fear, my love for yous so overpowering I’m afraid that I will disappear” That line in that song has been sending me since before you got here, my baby. But my love for you doesn’t make me disappear, it makes me so massive and spilling out with love and joy and laughter I don’t know how I fit in rooms anymore. Two years of learning and falling deep, deeply in love with you. I’m so lucky to be your mom! I revel and delight in every single ounce of you. Your fist pumping dance, the way you call everyone baby. How you walk across the room and reach out and say “mommy, I wanna hold you.” Oh, your scowling face too and when you throw your entire body on the floor in a silent protest. The way your feet weigh 100 pounds but you? Only 20. The flirty face you make when you see a friend or a perfect stranger, leaving a trail of melted hearts in your wake wherever you go. I often look up and see a mouth agape with a hand on the heart and I instantly know that persons just laid eyes on you. And it’s not just because you are unbelievable to look at, it’s because you just are love. You want to connect and touch and love and be loved. You still love sharp objects and glasses of wine but your main interests these days are kissing and hugging. Being close to someone who speaks the same love language as you can really change your life, having a child that does will knock you clean on your ass.

Happy birthday to my favorite woman in the world. I can’t believe the luck of my hand getting you as a mother. You are the deepest, warmest, strongest person that I know and I feel so blessed that you instilled in me a great sense of power in my own thoughts and my own dreams and my own heart. I really don’t think anyone has trusted a child more than you trusted me and it has allowed me the life of a woman who takes big swings and reaps great rewards. I’m so grateful for your wisdom and all that you’ve taught me, but more so for your humility and all you’ve allowed me to teach you. It inspires me with my own children each day. I see you in my face and my hands and in the eyes of my babies and am truly brought to my knees about our time on this spinning planet and mothers and daughters and how if we can truly see each other then we are truly free. I love you the very most mama. Thanks for seeing me and giving me wings.
