We are so honoured to be involved in a Repair Shop special that saw us exchange our views on the importance of heritage crafts with the former Prince of Wales. We visited him and his team at Dumfries House in Autumn 2021 to see The Prince’s Foundation’s Building Craft Programme, and we returned to the barn with two items to help repair. This beautiful Chinese vase arrived in The Repair Shop with a long history. Having been made into a lamp base many years before, it had sat alongside Kate’s Dad’s chair throughout her childhood, until an unfortunate accident with a skipping rope smashed it into pieces. The lamp was repaired and after the death of her father it served as a reminder of happy times. Kate kindly entrusted me to take the old restoration apart and to try and give the lamp a new lease of life. This was such a beautiful piece to work on, not just the blue and white decoration but the feel of the glaze on the surface was a pleasure to handle, a testament to the quality of the original maker. The vase responded well to treatment and I was able to dismantle the old repair and clean away the previous adhesive and fill material with good results. The finished piece was bonded using conservation grade adhesive a colour fill technique and a small amount of retouching. There is s real satisfaction in knowing that this vase can now be used and enjoyed for many more years to come. This salt glazed urn arrived in a dreadful condition having been damaged 25 years ago. It languished in a cellar until it was rediscovered by Adam after the death of his father, John. Each of the three elements had damage and there were signs of extensive previous restoration alongside the damage that occurred when a wall collapsed onto it. The urn, one of a pair, held many happy memories of childhood visits for Adam, visiting Grandparents near Sheffield. After extensive conservation, it can now once again be enjoyed and used by the family. The story of this Urn and many others items feature in a new book, The Repair Shop, life in the barn. The book also tells the backgrounds to many of the experts featured in the program and how they came to work in their chosen fields. Great seeing the alabaster light shade on tonight’s episode of The Repair Shop, one of my more challenging projects. The shade having been accidentally broken was then left outside. Further water and frost damage then occurred.
