Memories are everything. And ours were the best. This picture takes me right back to summer days, and lazy tube rides down rivers, on the way up to weekend getaways. Every day was an adventure; every day remains so. I’ve learned a lifetime of things this past year, not the least of which is that grief changes everything, and in that upheaval, it has the power to sink you or strengthen you. But it’s you who decides which of those it does. For me, and with Brian, it has done the latter. I feel invincible these days. I feel calm, I feel focused, I feel determined. That I got to spend so much time on this earth with my soulmate is a blessing that urges me onward. I was the luckiest, and I remain so. If you are grieving, I hope all the same for you. That the memories you shared be the fuel you need to thrive every day until at last you are reunited with your person again. They would want nothing less. And they know, more than anyone, that you are capable of even more.

Find yourself a person who never takes selfies but puts up with yours. For that is your soulmate. ✨ Mi Brian, tan lindo siempre. ✨ T-minus 4 days to Star Trek Day. Last year I watched from home on the couch with my favorite person; this year I’ll be on stage in LA thinking about my favorite person. Happy of course but also & always now a wee bit sad – because that is #grief. And it’s okay. The sad is okay. The sad will never go away, because you miss your other half, but the happy can grow, I am finding, in spite of the sad, around it, through it, and even side-by-side with it. I absolutely know Brian will be with me on Star Trek Day, as he was last year, beaming, proud of me, making me laugh, making me think, encouraging me, reminding me that I have more work to do. My work and our work and Trek work. Looking forward to hanging out with our extended family again, Starfleet officers & fans alike, and for as long a time as I have to come. #ForBrian #StarTrek @startrek @startrekonpplus #StarTrekDay
Honored to have been invited to speak and to share a poem at the @IrishArtsCenter’s 13th Annual PoetryFest this past weekend. A series of events and a serendipitous encounter in Canada (thanks to Star Trek and Irish dancing) led me right back to Brian’s old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen in NYC, our friends at @ardesiawinebar, and a splendid opening night of favorite poems presented by poets & guests alike in the gorgeous space that is the Irish Arts Center. I spoke about Brian and read “The Winding Banks of Erne” by William Allingham, a poem inspired by Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal – Brian’s hometown – written by a poet known as the bard of #Ballyshannon. I will be making my way there for a third time this year and still have not been able to put on paper any words that would do the landscape and the people proper justice. So I defer for now to Mr. Allingham and can only hope that one day I might find my way to being able to write something of value about a part of this world that holds a piece of my heart. Also, note the silver hair. Brian was always telling me how much silver hair suited me and encouraged me to rock it. Much like he championed my Ortegas haircut. So for this December, I’ve gone silver. And who knows…maybe for a good bit longer. #ForBrian #WithBrian 📸: @rebeccasmeyne for the @irishartscenter
Made it through this year with the help of these two angels. And Star Trek. And Brian, who was inside singing and playing music for a packed house when this picture was taken last year. We had stepped outside for better lighting, to capture our shirts on a perfect night, organized by my talented man. Still here smiling because of him. And still going. To more nights like this. #WithBrian #ForBrian
Space cowboy country blues on the purple #StarTrekDay carpet. A wish to one day ride into a western and a nod to my Brian’s “Irish Cowboy Country Blues” album. Brian “Bickie” Bannon. My prince. For all the grief this year has been, it has also been a celebration, in honor of him, the man I adore, who changed my life and knows my soul. This month is no different. This month is for Brian. And so will be all my posts. (The holidays can, respectfully, f*ck off.) I miss him still, furiously, and yet fall in love somehow every day more. But life is never what we plan. Or at least rarely that. Life is most often what we make of plans gone awry. So rise out of the ashes we will. We must. #ForBrian #WithBrian
For my birthday @sorayadesignsthings drew me a picture of Brian that captures him perfectly in every way, surrounded by nature, in that stance of his, with his guitar always close. I took it with me to Las Vegas and then to LA, along with the LEGOtegas that my brother-in-law made for me (with pink LEGO brain and all). In the background you see two hearts and the edge of a butterfly wing from a drawing my niece made for me. 🦋 How incredibly fortunate and grateful I am to be surrounded by artists who continue to use their talents to honor Brian’s memory. My world is brighter because of them. This weekend I will be spending it in the company of Brian’s friends and some of the best Irish musicians in NYC as we come together for a weekend of Trad Music to celebrate my prince and to continue the work he started through IMPAQ (Irish Musicians, Poets, and Artists of Queens Inc.), a not-for-profit organization that enables the performance & education of Irish arts & culture by funding free events that celebrate & rightfully pay the musicians & artists who make such entertainment possible. His first event was a week-long Trad Music festival last year that he won grants for, organized to the last detail, promoted, emceed, recorded, and even occasionally performed at, without ever letting any of us sing the praises he so deserved. He wanted to showcase only the music and the work of the musicians he had assembled. We all got to experience a wonderful week’s worth of Brian doing so much of what he did so well, without ever possibly imagining that one year later his closest friends would be tasked with trying to recreate a fraction of the project he undertook. But here we are and try we will. For Brian “Bickie” Bannon: Musician, IMPAQ Founder, NYC Bartender, Ballyshannon Native, Our Brilliant Friend. And my whole world. 🎶😌☘️ #ForBrian #WithBrian #IrishMusic #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds #LLAP
Some days I think, the Universe has no idea what it’s unleashed. Other days I think, it knows precisely.
Brian knew how much I loved live music of all kinds and made sure to sit me right in front of a banjo (tenor or five-string) whenever he had the opportunity (even though he freely admitted he did not care for the banjo half as much as I do). Whether it was a show at a pub or the opera or a concert hall or on Broadway, I always had the best seat, because of him. Then last year happened, and my world stopped, but you know what? The music didn’t. It hasn’t. Brian left me with so much music. Even when I couldn’t see tomorrow, the right songs played. Not only his own, and not only from so many memories attached to songs & artists & experiences, but also from his friends. Incredible musicians (five of the best featured above, wearing Brian’s Sean Fhéile shirts, at a music festival in Brian’s honor this past September) who have been celebrating him all year, from that day one, the best way they know how—with the music he loved. So really I’m not surprised, since I could always count on Brian to make sure I had everything, that he has left me with the best seats to the best shows with the best musicians, who I now also call friends, for life. In NYC and in Ireland and in places I have yet to visit. Thank you to everyone who helped me celebrate my Brian this year. Near and far. Those who knew him and adored him, throughout his adventure of an extraordinary life, and those who came to know him through me, because of Strange New Worlds. Onward we go. #ForBrian #WithBrian #NYC
This here is Manda. Our lives crossed paths this past August, but he was rescued last December—orphaned by either drought or human-wildlife contact—and dubbed a Christmas miracle. A small elephant with a big heart. With long legs for his size and a fighting spirit I recognized at once, Manda stood out especially to me for the timing of his rescue, his inspiring tenacity, and his beautiful name. “Manda” is the name of a hill not far from where he was rescued by the @sheldricktrust in Tsavo West, Kenya, but in Spanish the verb “mandar” means “to send” and “quién manda” means “who’s in charge.” And so I got the message, took his lead, and am now a tiny part of his extraordinary life. The world is a harsh place, but there are wonderful things happening every day, in all corners, thank to people who are making it so. Which is something uplifting to remind yourself of when so much feels dark. 🐘💫 What wildlife rescue & rehabilitation organizations do you support? Please share in the comments!
