My daughter-girl @thando_d is working away and couldn’t make Thanksgiving this year, so she sent me this beautiful song by @cecewinans titled “Goodness of God.” It was such a blessing in my life that we tried something a little different at my table and instead of saying a blessing before the food, we sang out loud. Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours 🫶🏾🙏🏾🎶
Without Barbara Walters there wouldn’t have been me—nor any other woman you see on evening, morning, and daily news. She was indeed a Trailblazer. I did my very first television audition with her in mind the whole time.
Grateful that she was such a powerful and gracious role model.

In my 20s, I heard a story that still abides with me to this day. Otis Moss Sr., a poor sharecropper, worked all his life to care for his family, suffering indignities and humiliations that generations before him had long endured. For the first time, in his 50s, he went to cast his vote. On Election Day, he got up before dawn, got dressed in his best suit, and went to his polling location—and was turned away in three locations. After walking all day, covering more than 18 miles, he returned home, exhausted and depleted, never experiencing the joy of voting. He died before the next election.
Every time I cast a ballot, I choose not only for myself but also for Otis Moss Sr. and for the countless others who wanted to, but couldn’t. Today I got an email assuring me that my mail-in ballot has been counted. It brought tears to my eyes when I read it. This is why I vote, what’s your reason?

I just got the news that #WhatHappenedToYou, my book with Dr. Bruce Perry, has sold a million copies. I’ve learned that understanding what happened to you and those you love is vital to moving past old hurts and stepping in to a better life. When I look back at my young girl self, I marvel at the dream God had for me. It exceeded any dream I could imagine. Thank you to everyone who bought the book or listened to the audio. The relationship we have with our hairdresser is a sacred one. @nicolemangrumhair now takes care of my hair. She does it all, including separating each little curl. Andre Walker (@walkersimmonsdesign) had that responsibility for 30 years for The Oprah Winfrey Show. God bless him. There were others who helped along the way. My grandma braided my hair as a kid on her porch. Early in my career, Lydia Lively took me to her barbershop to chop off all my hair when a French perm damaged it. During the filming of Beloved, Peter Owen introduced me to the incredible world of natural wigs in order to preserve my own. All these people are a part of the journey that got my hair to be strong, resilient, and purposeful. My hair tribe.

This is the part of the team that made seven seasons of #QueenSugar happen! For over seven years they showed up every single day with their best selves to create what I think is one of the best shows of my life—and it was an honor to produce it and have it air on my network. At our finale brunch, @nckash summed it up perfectly, “I’ve learned that as an adult we get to choose our family and for years to come I will choose everyone of you.” My Queen Sugar family forever!
