My beautiful, loving, talented and brilliant Situ (Arabic for “grandmother”) passed away at 100 years old. Completely trilingual and fluent in Arabic, Spanish and English, she came from Syria to Mexico by boat with her family as a young girl. There, she met my grandfather and told him that a new life life was waiting for them in America. Through her hard work and sacrifice, her children and grandchildren were able to create full lives here.
She was an avid reader and constantly curious. She read everything from DH Lawrence to Faulkner to Marquez to biographies of Cleopatra, Katherine Graham, Michelle Obama and Joan Rivers. She instilled in me a sense of curiosity and a willingness to learn and seek when I didn’t know the answers.
She was a natural optimist, a beacon of morality and someone whom I will always think in times of self doubt, “This is who you come from, Bryan. Never forget that.” There wasn’t one moment of my life where I didn’t feel her love and acceptance. How lucky to know her. How lucky to be loved by her.
