Mark Ruffalo Instagram – The movement to return water and #LandBack to Indigenous Peoples is growing. Please watch this powerful video and join me in supporting the Nüümü (Paiute) and Newe (Shoshone) people of Payahuunadü (Owens Valley, California) as they work to meet their first goal of raising $900,000 by February 21st to purchase and return a rare 5-acre oasis and healing center called Three Creeks back to Indigenous care. Three Creeks will be a center for ceremony, cultural revitalization, food sovereignty, and education. They are 2/3’s of the way to their fundraising goal – let’s support them in reaching it! The story of Payahuunadü and its connection to Los Angeles is important to share. Since time immemorial, Payahuunadü has been home to the Nüümü (Paiute) and Newe (Shoshone) Peoples. It’s located 4 hours north of Los Angeles on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Indigenous name for the land Payahuunadü means “place of the flowing water” and is reflective of the abundant water flowing down from the mountains. Since 1913, the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has taken & exported its water from the lands of the Nüümü (Paiute) and Newe (Shoshone) Peoples. LADWP owns 95% of the valley, while the Tribes combined own 1/3 of 1%. For over a century, land that was once lush has been turned into a dry desert as Los Angeles continues to take the water from here.
