When disaster strikes in war-ravaged Syria, a group of ordinary Syrians don their trademark white helmets and rush in to save lives. The White Helmets consist of 3,000 volunteer first responders who come from all walks of life, including bankers, tailors, pharmacists, firefighters and engineers. These tenacious men and women have been garnering attention this week for their vital response to the devastation caused by Monday’s earthquake. Working around the clock looking for survivors under the rubble, these brave heroes have saved countless lives. As temperatures plummet, and with very little equipment, they’ve dug some victims out with their bare hands. Even today with time running out, these rescue teams continue their perilous hunt, searching for any signs of life in the collapsed buildings and chaos on the streets.
One small snapshot, a painstaking six-hour rescue and relief effort shown here. A cause for joy after the White Helmets managed to rescue this brave little girl Sham and her brother from the rubble, talking and gently singing to them throughout the ordeal. @the_whitehelmets ‘Throughout the video, one thing is clear, despite working round the clock to rescue victims, the White Helmets volunteers remain kind and compassionate.’ Rebuilding the lives of these children will be a significant challenge but thanks to these incredible rescue missions, these brave young children are miraculously given a chance.

After six long hours, the White Helmets managed to rescue brave little Sham and her brother from the rubble of this week’s earthquake.
Throughout the video, one thing is clear: despite working round the clock to rescue victims, the White Helmets volunteers remain kind and compassionate. They truly are the best of humanity. Please donate now as they respond to the earthquake catastrophe.

Following yesterday’s tragic earthquakes in northern Syria and southern Turkey, it is reported this morning that more than 5,000 people have lost their lives and tens of thousands are injured. These figures will undoubtedly continue to rise. A huge international aid effort has already begun as rescuers in both countries race to save people trapped beneath rubble, working in freezing temperatures.
Most vulnerable in any disaster are always the children – those who have lost their homes and are sleeping rough, those separated from their families and those still trapped in the debris and unable to escape.
Agencies have been quick to respond. @Unicef_UK are already desperately trying to reach vulnerable children with food, water and shelter. MSF @doctorswithoutborders are providing urgent field treatment in makeshift hospitals and providing medical supplies to local health facilities and any hospitals that are still standing. They say needs are very high in northern Syria, where vulnerable populations have been struggling after years of war.
This catastrophe will demand an international aid effort on a vast scale. @theofficialsting and I are supporting both MSF and Unicef, safe in the knowledge that these agencies will reach the people and communities most in need.

Update from MSF:
“We are very shocked and saddened by the impact of this disaster on the thousands of people touched by it, including our colleagues and their families”, says Sebastien Gay, MSF Head of Mission in Syria.

I’m very sad to hear that Jeff Young has passed away, beloved Hammond player and vocalist on the Brand New Day album, and one of those who played in the band at my home on 9/11 where we recorded the All This Time concert.
A wonderful musician and a great soul, we wish him well on his journey and may he sail in calm waters.
Spotted in Times Square.
Thank you @ivorsacademy, @amazonmusic and @amazonmusicuk.

To all my American friends, as a British national I would never presume to tell you who you should vote for, but I want to congratulate you on the opportunity to have your voice heard this Tuesday.
Regardless of your party affiliations, everyone should embrace this opportunity, it may be one of the most important decisions you will ever be asked to make.
Thank you,
Sting.
