It always feels like home in Fengshan hawker centre, where @fooseckguan.sg, myself and the team had our market visits this morning. It’s my third time here in 2 weeks, as we visited in the evening after our weekday house visits and after food distribution. A volunteer remarked that it almost feels like a Kampong because the residents and stallholders we meet are always warm and welcoming, and ready to engage in a deep conversation about their lives and the issues that matter to them. One interesting convo that popped up by a lecturer having her breakfast, touched on how we can continue to foster interest amongst the youth to patronise hawker centres as a social gathering point, and to appreciate the hawker trade. It is hard work being a hawker, with many of the stalls opening at 4-5am just to prep and make sure they are ready for the day. We are also appreciative for the wealth of affordable culinary options available to us, even as hawkers grapple with the rising costs of raw materials. Fengshan Hawker Centre

The WP East Coast team including @fooseckguan.sg and myself conducted our Christmas walkabout across the various markets this weekend, delivering 1000 Christmas cookies to the residents of East Coast GRC. This year, we supported a home baker Yummy Story (@yummytory2022 on Instagram) who customised cookies in the shape of a Christmas tree with icing to mimic trimmings and decorations. It was encouraging to feel the warmth and appreciation from residents, many of whom we are now meeting on a repeated basis as the various markets have become familiar ground over the years of outreach.
Personally as I reflect on 2022 and the major life changes I’m going through with baby N and juggling raising two young kids alongside professional and political demands, Christmas this year feels a tad quieter and with much less fanfare. It’s also given me pause to appreciate the people in my life who have been a source of strength and support along the way, as well as those whom our paths have crossed or converged.
And perhaps that is the spirit of Christmas, for us to take stock of life as it were and our impact on the people in our lives. When we think about the season of gifting, perhaps it is less about chasing the harried purchasing of physical gifts that we bear, and more of the immaterial such as time, thoughtfulness and kindness that leave an indelible trace in hearts and minds. Such gifts are much harder to procure, and require more effort to consistently deliver. I wish everyone happiness and contentment for the coming year, and the now ubiquitous wish that may you also enjoy good physical and mental health always.

Would like 兔 wish everyone a healthy and happy year of the Rabbit this lunar new year! The WP East Coast GRC team, alongside @fooseckguan.sg , @abdulshariff.sg and myself, reprised tradition with our annual orange distribution at several locations in East Coast GRC over the weekend such as Simei, 16, 58, 85, 216 and 105 (Fengshan). We’re very grateful to have met with so many residents multiple times over the past year and there is always an underlying sense of celebration at each of the markets as Singaporeans are buoyed by a fresh start to the year ahead. It is also heartening to see how priorities have shifted over the last few years since covid. While in the past many would have uttered greetings of prosperity such as Huat ah! Or Gong Xi Fa Cai, it was unanimous this year that the topmost greeting of importance for everyone is “Sheng Ti Jian Kang” (身体健康),as many residents said that it is the most important blessing of them all. It is a great reminder for all of us to prioritise and focus on our physical and mental health for the coming year!
