My God I laughed till I choked

Underrated mental health tool and cognitive booster: PLAY
I’m serious! Google “science of play” and you’ll find references to studies proving all these amazing benefits that I inconveniently and constantly forget about! 🤡🎉
I’m working (hehe) on bringing more play into my life — whether in my occupation or in my free time. I know this might sound odd in the face of stereotypes about our work, but for a lot of artists (and scientists, and teachers, and healers, and entrepreneurs and and and), real free time can feel scarce. The side gigs a lot of us have are no joke (😜), but the fact that we’re always ‘on’, absorbing, contemplating, reassessing, optimizing, conceptualizing, balancing creation with paying the bills — even working with our literal dreams to see what they have to tell us — can mean we miss opportunities to be UN-intentional, silly, wild, naughty, messy and in the moment.
Sharing this moment when I just let myself enjoy the absurdity of life. Because I’m writing about it I’m now remembering the beautiful bowling ball I recently received and how I need to schedule time to go bowl with it because it’s so much fun. 🎳💫
In the meantime I’m going to figure out how to feel playful while prepping a chicken for dinner…. Ok someone’s getting on my table tonight in a bikini and it’s not gonna be me!👙🍗 I’m feeling it! 🥳
My unsolicited advice for today: GO PLAY! Even if it’s the smallest thing! Even if it’s at work! Even if it’s doing something weird with a chicken… um……. Have fun! 🥳 XOXO, P.

UPDATE 🗣️ Just finished the event and will post the recording when available. In the meantime check out the link in my bio for more info on how to learn more and support!
Kicking off @tahirihjustice Bighearted Campaign to support immigrant women and children fleeing violence. Great organization with great opportunities to support with your friends and colleagues. Come see what Tahirih does, learn about it’s incredible namesake — a 19th century woman in Persia (now Iran) who was the first known woman to publicly tear off her veil, and who was eventually killed for her beliefs. Her last reported words were “You can kill me as soon as you like, but you will never stop the emancipation of women.” We see this in Iran and all over the world. Here’s an opportunity to help in a solid way. Check it out. Link in my bio. 🪷

Immigrant women, girls, and all survivors of violence deserve to live in safety and with dignity. On #GivingTuesday, I’m proud to support @tahirihjustice, a national nonprofit (US) that serves immigrants fleeing gender-based violence.
The Tahirih Justice Center is named after Tahirih, a revolutionary 19th-century Persian woman of the Baháʼí Faith who was executed in Persia (now known as Iran) for unveiling and speaking out about her religious/spiritual beliefs. This took place more than two centuries ago, and yet, courageous women like Tahirih are still fighting for the most basic human rights here in the United States and all around the world.
By amplifying the experiences of survivors in communities, courts, and Congress, Tahirih’s mission is to create a world in which all people share equal rights and live in safety and with dignity. I hope you’ll consider supporting @tahirihjustice this #GivingTuesday with a donation of any amount.
Together, we can create a world that uplifts women, girls, immigrants, and all survivors of violence.

40 days since #MahsaAmini was murdered, since hundreds of innocent people — including women and 20+ children have been killed in the aftermath. 🥀 Dear family in Iran, we are still watching, still praying, making efforts in various fields to support a more just and free Iran. In awe of your courage. Sending you love. 🌹💪
Thanks to @khansarinia[Twitter] for sharing this. And to @shervinine for his beautiful song “Baraye”
Image/video description: A screen capture of a tweet that includes a video of weeping protesters singing to Baraye. Text of the tweet: “You don’t need to understand the lyrics, you don’t need to be Iranian, you don’t even need to have followed Iran news the past month to see forty-three years of the pain of an entire nation in this man’s tears. Soon, that pain will end.” A man cries openly as he holds up a sign bearing an image of Mahsa Amini and a young woman in front of him, with white bandages and what looks like blood on her face, sobs as she sings along.
Learning to soothe the ache of earthly loss with remembrance of the gift of another spiritual ancestor gained… Kevin Locke, Lakota name Tȟokéya Inážiŋ, meaning “The First to Arise,” brought so much beauty to the lives of so many with his gorgeous artistic talents. I never got to know him, but he was so often just a degree of separation away that I benefited from his steady, gentle presence and guidance in the Bahá’í community of the US. I feel so sad… I can only imagine the grief of those who were close to him. Praying for infinite blessings on his journey, and for soothing and healing for the hearts of his loved ones. I am filled with so much gratitude for and inspiration from his life on this plane. If you didn’t know this beautiful man please look up his life, his gorgeous flute playing and hoop dances. May the mission of his life carry on:

Many thanks to all who are supporting education worldwide via @themonafoundation!! Please check them out. I think you’ll be as excited about and encouraged by Mona’s work as I am! Every dollar, prayer, good wish counts. For monetary donations you can choose a particular project or let Mona send your contribution to the place with the most need at the time you give it. And you can set up drives for a group of friends or coworkers, or have friends support Mona’s projects for your birthday. Please consider getting to know the projects through the Mona website and socials and sharing. Lots of options, all very appreciated and powerful. Thank you! 🙏📚💫 #TheMonaFoundation #Education

Great news!!! @themonafoundation exceeded our #GivingTuesday goal by over 50%!! 18 young women will now be able to complete their education at the Barli Institute in Indore, India — improving the lives of an estimated 1,800 people along with them over time!! I’m so happy to see this and to know that so many people worked together to improve lives through so many organizations yesterday. Definitely something to remember when things get tough, that good things are happening too. I know I need that reminder daily. 🙏♥️🥹 Many many thanks to all who contributed financially or with good wishes and prayers for the success of this endeavor. Love to all!

May we clear away that which has not served us, may our commitment to that which is good be reconfirmed, may we experience the purest of joys — even in the midst of challenges. May the challenges strengthen us, increase our gratitude and compassion. May the shortcomings we see in others remind us of our own. May we be cognizant of the ancestors supporting our growth. May we over and over remember our own, and each other’s, humanity. And may we humbly, gratefully recognize and receive infinite blessings. We made it this far y’all. Here’s to applying all we’ve learned to a more courageous, just, prosperous, beautiful 2023. Happy New Year 🎆
With love,
Parisa

Today’s the day! Some history of two orgs I appreciate so much on this #GivingTuesday — @themonafoundation and @tahirihjustice. Please see their pages for info on how to contribute.
TW: Mention of violence.
Both these orgs were inspired by women who were killed for their beliefs and actions. Tahirih was a 19th century Persian poet, renowned for her deep religious and spiritual insights and revolutionary approaches (daring to speak of theological concerns the way men did and publicly removing her veil). At 38, held captive for being a Bahá’i, she was strangled with her veil after uttering the words: “You can kill me as soon as you like, but you will never stop the emancipation of women.”
In 1983 Mona Mahmudnizhad was just 17 when she was was tortured and sentenced to death by hanging in Iran for “misleading children and youth” as a teacher of Bahá’i children’s classes. Though the US formally requested clemency, Mona and nine other Bahá’i women were executed.
As a Bahá’i myself, I grew up with the stories of these women (the Bahá’í Faith originated in what was known as Persia, now known as Iran). It’s been an honor to support the work done in their names by organizations who, while inspired by Bahá’i women and ideals, are run by and in support of people of all Faiths and beliefs, and who focus on making sure that women and girls are centered. Though doing it in different ways, both these organizations are breaking cycles and paving new paths with and for so many people, in the US and all around the world.
Please consider getting to know these orgs today and if you’re able and feel moved to contribute, truly any amount would be appreciated. Many thanks. 🙏

I’m wearing red lipstick and a sky blue and white abstract pattern sweatshirt (hand-dyed with indigo and high vibes — shout-out @laylidyeshard) and extra large hoop earrings. I’m leaning on a white mantle.
Up today thinking of #Iran, the voices silenced, the innocent lives taken or set for execution for calling for freedom. Then I see the news of #ColoradoSprings, innocent lives taken in a place people had gathered for joy, for being who they are. Terror continues to ascend. 💔 These are not isolated things. Around the world there are countless examples of hatred & violence, between nations & parties, in communities, in households, & even inside our own selves. This quotation came to mind, as it often does when my heart is aching over our addiction to tearing each other apart. It seems sometimes that it’s just inherently human to be horrible & destructive, selfish & hateful. But if it is, then it’s just as inherently human to heal & be healed, to love beyond reason, to evolve, to transcend. This is a choice. A choice we have to make on a day to day, moment by moment, breath by breath basis. Every moment we pause to consider whether there is a different, more loving way to approach a person, an idea, we shift the atmosphere in & around us. The more of us that do it, the more we change what it means to be human from an accident of ancestry to an autonomous being, immensely capable of carrying forward “an ever-advancing civilization.” Even as so many of us grieve the lives lost & in danger today, so many shower them with love from every direction, & find new energy to stand & demand wellbeing for all.
May our grieving be soothed, may we be strengthened in our evolution, may the souls taken from this world rest in peace. Amen.

“And the breeding-ground of all these tragedies is prejudice: prejudice of race and nation, of religion, of political opinion; and the root cause of prejudice is blind imitation of the past — imitation in religion, in racial attitudes, in national bias, in politics. So long as this aping of the past persisteth, just so long will the foundations of the social order be blown to the four winds, just so long will humanity be continually exposed to direst peril.”
– Abdu’l-Baha, Selections from the Writings of Abdu’l-Baha, p. 246.
A statement by the Bahá’í International Community at the UNHRC Special Session on Iran:
“Our hearts and the hearts of every unbiased observer ache as we watch the loss of innocent human life in Iran. As Iranians of every age and all walks of life call for social justice and equality, but are met with violence and repression instead of efforts to engage everyone in a genuine conversation on the future of Iran.
As you know, the Baha’is in Iran are all too familiar with persecution, with suffering, arbitrary imprisonment, denial of higher education, hate propaganda, executions, and daily harassment for 43 years. In fact, what we see in Iran today is the extension of this persecution to the generality of Iranians. A government that oppresses one group will surely be unjust to all groups in the long run. The Baha’i International Community has in all this time called for international legal mechanisms to hold Iran accountable at the United Nations, bringing its human rights violations to the world’s attention. Such mechanisms are the last hope of every oppressed individual, the only way the UN can stay true to its founding principles, showing victims of persecution that they can trust the human rights system, that human rights crimes cannot be committed with impunity, that the world stands with them, and will not let them suffer while we watch.
Establishing an independent fact-finding mission on Iran will now reinforce the call that Iran must abide by its human rights commitments. And it sends a message to the Iranian government that what its people want is a government that respect the rights of all: women, ethnic minorities, religious minorities, and indeed everyone as equal citizens. Thank you.”

23… an unfair trial. And over 475 protestors killed in the last few months… 💔
“These fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the ‘Most Great Peace’ shall come. Yet do we see your kings and rulers lavishing their treasures more freely on means for the destruction of the human race than on that which would conduce to the happiness of mankind. … These strifes and this bloodshed and discord must cease, and all men be as one kindred and one family. … Let not a man glory in this, that he loves his country; let him rather glory in this, that he loves [human] kind. …” – quoted by J. E. Esselmont in Baha’u’llah and the New Era, p. 39.

Amazing what a shift in mindset can do. As a child of the Caribbean, raised up between there and Florida, the idea of sitting outside on a frosty morning sounded like an extremely rude thing to do to myself. 😆 But I’ve been listening to (well, binging) @hubermanlab podcast and realizing how important it is for health to get unfiltered morning sun on my face (*safely* in my eyes) and suddenly words like “just bundle your behind up!” come to mind. It’s been so easy for me to feel like some aspects of nature can’t belong to me — lol even my *own* yard. To be honest, trauma has a way of narrowing focus, and if you aren’t even a little traumatized after the last three years please tell me your secret. 😅 It’s been very healing for me to pick my image of this big world apart into pieces and trust that there are parts I can thoroughly enjoy. I’m feeling so grateful this morning for the icy blanket on my yard. It looks like someone spread glitter all over it. I’m grateful for warm shoes (my feet are still cold 😂) and hot beverages. I’m grateful that I can hear the stream in front of me, and the HVAC unit behind me. I’m grateful that social media, with all its challenges, still very much provides a venue for sharing things like this and spreading love and encouragement. If your world is feeling small today, ask yourself if there’s another way to see it. Or ask if there’s another world you can see for a while. Sending you love and saying a prayer right now for whoever sees this.
Video description: Morning sun rising behind winter trees throws spindly shadows on a frosty grass yard, scattered with frosty brown leaves. Frost rests on a wooden deck rail.
I made this when I rented in the South. Now I own a little piece of land here and think of what wild things I can encourage the growth of. As Spring is coming fairly soon, consider finding out what ‘weeds’ you might be pulling that you should actually be putting in your salad — or straight into your mouth! My personal favorite of the latter are the chives that grow wild in so many places and can be mistaken for grass. Go to the supermarket, price chives (easily $3-$4 for a tiny amount) and see if you’ll ever mistake them for grass again. 😆 For real, in many places naturally growing greens are being chucked aside so folks can plant more kale and then worry about the weeds messing with it. Lol the weeds are sometimes more nutritious, tasty and they also happen to be FREE. Access to land and fresh food is a social justice issue, a mental and physical health issue, an environmental issue. It’s about our connection to the earth, our ancestors, each other and Self. Believe me, remembering that this planet is a place that offers gifts to everyone can be incredibly healing, even if the gifts aren’t yet noticed by or accessible to all of us. Knowing it reminds me that Mother Earth can have our backs when we let her and that there is sustenance and joy in having hers. 💚 If I get to be home when my yard starts to flourish I’ll try to post pics. Until then, do consider that as long as your soil is healthy (NYC can have high lead content and places all over can have pesticide or other contaminants) a lot of what is ‘stubbornly’ aka naturally, happily, robustly growing around you might be perfect on your plate. 🌱 ✨
🥀 Update 🥀 Raheem Taylor was executed today (2/7/23). Barred from having his spiritual advisor or legal team present, he died with only those who were supportive of his execution. Reading up on this case, there seems to have been so much wrong with how it was tried. This is such a sad outcome. May his soul find peace, and may this nation someday become a place of Justice.
🚨URGENT: Leonard “Raheem” Taylor is set to be executed on Feb. 7. His claims of innocence — including witness accounts — must be fully investigated before Missouri carries out this irreversible injustice. This is a state with a history of wrongful execution.
@innocenceproject has made it VERY SIMPLE AND EASY to take action and learn more about his story via the link in their bio now. It takes moments to have their form email sent out and to be connected by phone to the relevant offices. @innocenceproject
