All of our lives…we’ve been asked to practice our speech, to fix how we pronounce certain words, and if we have an ‘accent’. There are Deaf people who loathe speaking, that’s ok. There are Deaf people who are comfortable with speaking, that’s also ok. Some are not very good at it. Some are good. Here’s a video of my Deaf family speaking different words – a living proof that we’re all different in how we ‘speak’. We can laugh at ourselves and make jokes out of it BECAUSE we’re in a safe space. We’re comfortable with each other. It’s a fun game, but the real world can be cruel. For any hearing person to make fun of a Deaf person’s ‘speaking’ abilities or pressure them to ‘speak,’ that’s never ever okay. As for us, we’re happy with signing! 🤭🤣❤️🤟 Austin, Texas
Okay, we’re finally answering one of the most asked questions… does my hearing sister feel left out of a Deaf family? Her answer is a very simple one – one that might surprise many people. The bottom line is that when a family shares a common language, it becomes that much easier to communicate.
It’s funny that my hearing sister get asked this question a ton, but a Deaf person who comes from a hearing family doesn’t get asked this question.
“Can You Speak?” is probably the #1 most asked question for me (and many other Deaf people). We know what that question means – it is asking if we can speak using our vocal cords. But if you really look up the definition of ‘speak’, it’s so much more than that. It is to express ourselves, to have conversations, and beyond.
Sign language does all of the above (and so much more!). Our hands are our vessel to speak, express, chat, and speak up. Now, you know what my answer is. 👊✊👊 Austin, Texas

To @delta why are there still no captions? I along with millions of Deaf people travel and pay for our own plane tickets to find that we cannot enjoy live TV as well as movies. All because they are not captioned. It is 2023, this should not be happening at all. Get on with the program and make necessary changes, Delta.

This is a very famous, hilarious game played by Deaf people for decades! The person behind becomes the hands telling a story, joke, or whatever. The person in front must do their best to do the story justice using their facial expressions ONLY. The result? Tons of mistakes and laughing! 😂🤣😅 Austin, Texas

Teaching my hearing grandparents dance was a fun challenge. My grandma just turned 70 and my grandpa, 73. He also had a knee surgery recently!
