BLONDE is out worldwide today on Netflix. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of groundbreaking cinema like this, it’s the kind of work I’ve always dreamed of doing. I’m grateful to Andrew Dominik for bringing me into this chaotic, wonderful experiment of a film which was his dream, to Joyce Carol Oates for conjuring such a gut-wrenching full-throated allegory through the glittering icon of Marilyn Monroe, and to Ana De Armas for bringing about one of the mightiest performances I’ve ever seen in her singular Norma Jean. Storytelling is at its most alchemically powerful when it is less concerned with palatability or social graces, and more concerned with the truth that moves us deeper. We need narratives that push the boundaries because the human condition is messy, and in the mess we glimpse each other, sometimes parts we want to see and sometimes parts we don’t. It’s all human, and needs to see the light of day in order to heal. And sometimes, rarely, it’s conveyed with the bravery and unbridled artistry on display in this film. We will all be challenged by this story, and hopefully we will all learn something too. I definitely did.
To Al: Brother, your transformation has been spectacular. Since we met in 2014, it’s been an honor to watch you grow into the man you’ve become. I’ve watched you harness that indelible spirit and focus it, with love and patience, in the direction of your dreams, touching hearts with your work and giving voice to the subtler things which can heal. I’ve watched grace develop internally and reflect externally. Its been beautiful to behold. And it’s no surprise that when you took on this mantle in earnest, your stunning bride appeared at just the right time, a co-conspirator in the adventure of your heart. Everybody involved saw the opening, a chance to do something truly unexpected, the rarest opportunity at this scale; To be part of something that could matter. And we jumped as a team. And we went through the rinse cycle as a team. And we came out somewhere new. And that’s what’s reflected on the screen and has been beamed into the hearts and minds of an army of fans already hungry for more of this story.
