We are all visitors on this earth. Kemperi and his family were so significant in shaping how i view and carry out life. We have to listen and watch and care for as much as we can while we have such special people that come into our lives. This is a photo of me at 20 years old embibing life and being so deeply impressioned by the Quichua and Huaorani people along the Napo and Yasuni of Ecuador. The last photo is some 20 years later at least. My thoughts and condolences go to all that had the opportunity to be in the presence of Kemperi. And most certainly my heart goes out to the tight communities along the Cononaco and Noneno. Kemperi was leader to his people in every sense of the word. And an ultimate example of a warrior for the Indigenous. I was living alone in a tent down the river in the jungles of Ecuador. One evening I heard a gunshot from a family upriver. I went to investigate and in the tall grass I found a dead hawk that had been shot as it posed a highly unlikely risk of eating their chickens. That night I had a private hawk dinner. In March they make these walled round nests in the sandy banks near the river or waters edge. They keep the depth of their nest parallel to the waters edge. The waterlevel seeps through the sand and keeps their eggs submerged. The eggs and tadpoles must develop rapidly before water levels change within only a few inches. This constant water level is very rare in rain forest environment and so a majority of nests and eggs and tadpoles parish. Two Maasaii coming home for a brief family get together after being out for three years with their cattl. Constantly scouring the landscape for new grazing land for their animals. During their time as Warriors they are live outside almost everyday. Sleeping outside under the stars keeping an eye out for predators and other marauding warrior groups that are out protecting as well as stealing other cattle. A collection of butterflies that I was mesmerized by in the sweaty midday sun on the banks of the Mekong river in Laos. (Not the Sahara) Within 3 feet from one another would be a completely different complex of butterflies of completely different species and colors. (More videos to share). It was a full day of walking the ridges & through the high elevation valleys. At 10,000 feet working our way through the #Andes. Most of the route was carved into the mountain sides or even layed w/ stone cobbles & ancient steps. They were the routes of the Great #Inca Civilisation & civilization before. The Family I came across were moving their herd of #Llamas to lower elevations to evade the harshest of winter that was pending. We took refuge under a rock overhang/shallow cave. And the 300 or so llamas were corralled in a natural existing basin surrounded mostly by unclimbeable cliff side. The areas w/out the steep Cliffside were blocked off w/ crude stone walls- just enough to keep the animals put for the night. This convenient location to end the day was a location used by this family’s relatives for long before any possible idea of # of generations. I could see by broken pottery shards around that this was a resting place for people for thousands of years. It would be highly likely even in the tens of thousands. As this family makes this 100 mile journey twice a year (once going down, then returning back to higher elevations the following spring) They already had some soot stained aluminum pots & things hanging under the rock ledges ready for some hot tea to be boiled up w/ some potatoes afterward. A few old wooden palettes were there for the finishings of their shelter. Surprisingly, there was an old defunct refrigerator there as well, used as a mouse proof closet for some of their other belongings. It must had been carted on the back of one of their strongest llamas some years earlier. The night was bitter cold. The family all slept together under a bed made of Llama hides & piles of Llama wool blankets. For myself, I felt like I barely made it through the night w/ my bedroll & llama fleece that I was carrying w/ me tied to my pack. This location was one of many as they made this annual migration. A beautiful thing to see the morning sun. The frost was heavy on the backs of all the llamas.
