“This home is bespoke; it’s one of a kind. It is designed to reflect who Karan is: glamorous, fun, and also a little over the top! It’s not a space that can be imitated,” says interior designer Gauri Khan (@gaurikhan).
Knowing Karan’s largesse and his love for entertaining, Gauri wanted the home to serve as a seamless extension of his personality, where guests could make themselves comfortable from the get-go.
The main entryway wall is clad in a dramatic, fluted, black-and-white “panda” marble that lines the passageway into a light-filled living room, the tall, arched French windows open onto a serene terrace—Karan’s favourite spot—dotted with tropical plants, where he can enjoy his coffee.
Both Karan and Gauri also admit to an affinity for the powder room—during the day, the sunlight filters in, reflecting off the glossy surfaces—which Khan accented with a statement turbine light, a vanity with marble horse-head detail, and a forest-green wall.
While Gauri has used a medley of richer tones for the public areas, for Karan’s private spaces—his dressing room, bedroom, and bathroom—she adopted a softer palette of beiges, muted metal tones, and wooden herringbone floors, while still keeping some distinctive threads to tie in the entire design story.

The bond between Gauri Khan (@gaurikhan), who has successfully carved a career as an interior expert and Karan Johar — a director, producer, talk-show host, and author—dates back to when he, as a young assistant director on the seminal film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, struck up a friendship with Gauri and Shah Rukh Khan. In the nearly three decades since, they have seen each other through different professional paths, the birth of five children (Khan’s three and Johar’s twins), milestone celebrations, and even some personal setbacks.
While “#friendslikefamily” is now a hackneyed term, Johar has long been unequivocal that Khan is and will always be his chosen family.
So when Karan Johar decided that the approximately 5,500-square-foot apartment extension to his penthouse home, nestled in a quiet cul-de-sac off Bandra’s Pali Hill, needed a gut renovation, Gauri Khan was the only choice. The home with its wraparound terrace served Johar, his mother Hiroo, and his twins Roohi and Yash tremendously during the lockdown. “It’s such a vast space, and with no furniture around, the kids could run around and play. Every evening, once Roohi and Yash were done with virtual schooling, we would gather there for chai, and get in some family time.”

“I would highly recommend that if you have a friend who is an interior expert, you get them to design your home. Gauri gave this home so much love, it really shows in every corner,” Karan told AD. And in turn, Gauri says, “Karan’s approval means the most. It’s like getting an A-plus in an exam!”
