The cold and rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of our volunteers as everyone set forth to engage the residents at Simei Hola cafe and Bedok Corner this morning. Special thanks to our new young volunteers who live in East Coast GRC, as well as young couple volunteers Yuan Er and Jie Qiang, who joined us in spite of being pregnant in second trimester! It was a cold day but our hearts were warmed. Stay dry and safe everyone.

Evening house visits with @fooseckguan.sg and the WP East Coast team at Bedok North led myself to an encounter with a lovely multigenerational family with a little boy who is almost the same age as my second! His mum and I traded stories on balancing motherhood and being a working mum. It’s not always easy as there are only 24 hours in a day, but we can try to make it for their “mundane” routines throughout the day such as preparing their food, bathing them, putting them to sleep etc. The days may seem long in such instances, but the years are indeed short as the children grow up so fast. Swipe to see how tall baby N is now! We’ve come a long way. Bedok North, Singapore

It was a touching moment during house visits in Bedok Reservoir View, as residents who were conducting church cell group invited us into their home for a chat. They huddled together for a short prayer and spoke warm words of encouragement as they prayed. Regardless of whether one is a religious believer, the one thing we can all agree on is the warmth of humanity, friendship and kindness in bonding people together. Their well wishes and prayers to encourage myself, @abdulshariff.sg and the volunteers on this arduous journey lifted our spirits and gave us the motivation to keep walking.

Due to the inclement weather, we had to shelve our plans for landed estate visits and found ourselves in Simei street 1 instead. One recurrent feedback that we received touched on seepage into the walls during periods of heavy rain, partially caused by wear and tear in the brick wall structure on the sides of the HDB flats. We also had the pleasure of speaking to a family who recently gained permanent residency after working here for many years. They invited us in and made us their rendition of teh tarik infused with crushed cardamom, which their neighbour, an elderly auntie next door loves and regularly drinks! The family celebrates Lunar New Year with their neighbours and their daughter D was enthusiastically telling us about her school excursion to Hortpark and practising for her grade 1 piano examination. The family agreed wholeheartedly with LO @pritamsingh76 ‘s suggestion in parliament calling for an English test in assessment for citizenship or permanent residency. It was a rainy morning and the team got drenched by the heavy rain during house visits, simply by standing along the corridors. But the warmth from residents who gave us water and even followed us down two floors to pass us an umbrella was touching and we had a good engagement. Simei, Singapore
