Happy Chaharshanbeh Suri from the fire in my heart ❤️🔥 Tonight is the first night of a week long of Persian New Year celebrations, starting with a festival of fire called Chaharshanbeh Suri or “The Scarlet Wednesday.” It is celebrated by lighting fireworks and jumping over fire on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year, for purification before the New Year. You can jump over a little candle or small fire outside if you’d like to celebrate it and burn any leftover 2022 energy that needs to be purified 🥳🔥 Chaharshanbeh Suri comes from an ancient Iranian ritual, rooted in Zoroastrianism, that was celebrated to honor the spirits of the dead, which feels tragically appropriate this year. Ancient Iranians believed that during these last five days of the year, the spirits of the dead (including a specific category for “the souls of children and those who died without sin”) would reunite in joy. Maybe this year, their joy will involve revenge on their murderers. Beautiful artwork by @nazpainting who explains: “Time for revenge! Since I have been in Italy, I have been greatly influenced by the masterpieces of Italian artists and I am inspired by them so much. I used this masterpiece of #gentileschi (Judith Slaying Holofernes) to represent the suppressed anger of Iranian women for hundreds of years.”

One of the many tragic parts of the story is that Iranian women were very instrumental in the 1979 Iranian People’s Revolution that deposed the Shah, but they became the biggest victims as soon as Khomeini hijacked it. To this day, it is referred to as the Islamic Revolution and it has its very own robust army called the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) #IRGCterrorists . But it was called the Iranian Revolution first. It was considered a democratic revolution until Khomeini’s Islamic Regime hijacked it. It was the Iranian People’s Revolution. Under the Shah, Iranian women had achieved some of the most progressive women’s rights in the world at the time. Iran was a socially liberal, modern place. But the Shah was way too politically controlling/economically exploitative and way too involved with foreign powers. The USA and UK had put the Shah in power after a coup, and America’s CIA created a secret police/intelligence agency called SAVAK to ensure that he would stay in power. At all costs. No matter what Iranian people wanted. The SAVAK was such a viscous organization that it assassinated one of its own founders at some point. Many Iranians were imprisoned and killed by them. I’ll tell the story another time, but my grandfather spent over a year in the Shah’s prisons just for unionizing for workers rights and better wages. Many of his friends were executed. 🕊️🕊️🕊️ So it didn’t take long for the Iranian people to not want to be controlled anymore by a literally British-appointed, made-up King (Reza Pahlavi was an Iranian soldier that the UK installed. He didn’t come from a “royal” dynasty or lineage) and it didn’t take long for the Iranian people to not want to be controlled anymore by Western imperialism. They came together and took down Reza Pahlavi and his CIA-created/CIA-trained SAVAK. But then Europe said “our turn!” and gave us something unimaginably worse: Khomeini. (more on that another time) It took 54 years to take a violent monarchy down. It took 44 years to take an extremely violent, fascist regime down. But this time we won’t f*ck up the handoff. 😤 Iranians deserve to finally have their own say in their own damn country.
This clip is proof that the Islamic Regime has been silencing Iranian women and lying about everything from the very beginning…. Within weeks of hijacking the Iranian People’s Revolution, the Islamic Regime (IR) took over all TV and radio stations, and refused to report on the massive women’s marches or any of Iranian women’s demands to KEEP their rights, their jobs and their freedoms. Iranian women at the time were a huge part of Iranian society – they were judges, high-level government officials, internationally famous artists, influential thinkers, free women – and it all got taken away by the Regime, practically over night. I truly wonder if the world would have allowed this if these women and children were “European.” Why does it make a difference that Iran is in the Middle East? Why does it make this less of a human rights crime? The Islamic Regime took over the entire nation’s broadcasting system (IRIB) by force, and to this day it is their propaganda machine and where they air forced confessions from t0rtured and beaten up freedom fighters. @potus @statedept @secblinken have waived the sanctions on the IRIB and I still would like to know why they claim that doing this is in “America’s interests.” They should lift sanctions that would get free internet access to the people in Iran. They should lift sanctions that block humanitarian aid to the people in Iran. They must strictly and aggressively enforce sanctions that target the Regime. The IRIB is one of the Regime’s weapons. Of all sanctions, why waive those? Perhaps the IR wouldn’t beat and t0rture innocent Iranians as much, if they didn’t have anywhere to broadcast their forced confessions. But it doesn’t matter anyway. F the IRIB. We have the internet now. They can’t hide shit anymore with their same garbage ass, lo-fi looking ass, 1980s style propaganda and lies.
“I want to live freely.” Is that too much for these children and their mothers to be asking for? 44 years of the most severe kind of brainwashing in existence and the Islamic Regime still couldn’t convince Iranian women and girls that they are better off without freedom or rights. In fact, Iranian gen Z are ground zero for the Islamic Regime’s experiment in “Islamification” and they have been subjected to the IR’s propaganda and brainwashing for their entire lives. And yet they still don’t buy into a single ounce of it!!! Bahahah Iranians are too smart and sophisticated at their core. No matter how much the IR deprived us or how hard they tried to turn us into Neanderthals, they failed. God bless the children of Iran, who are still in the streets (when they’re not being poisoned at school) fighting this viscous dictatorship. It was Iranian Gen Z, the generation born and raised in the Islamic Regime, that reignited the flicker of hope in all of our hearts and led us into our final battle. THIS TIME WE WILL WIN. The Islamic Regime’s War against Iranians and our children and our mothers and our brothers and our fathers and our uncles and our friends and…. ALL Iranians! …. has gone on far too long.
“We will continue until the complete liberation of women.” And so they did. And here we are. 44 years later. Wondering how much longer we must continue to fight for our BASIC human rights. There has never, not even for a moment, been freedom or democracy in Khomeini’s Regime. The Islamic Regime does not even follow its own “laws.” They have less of a code than the mafia or gangs. No amount of brutality is beyond them. It’s hard to see my beautiful people 44 years ago, chanting some of the exact same slogans that they still chant today. Refusing to surrender their freedom, no matter how long it takes to get it back. I pray and truly believe that we are finally being heard. (Well, *listened to. Because I know the free world could hear us all along. It’s just time for them to care. Or at least PICK A SIDE. Because you cannot support Iranian’s right to live, while also supporting a Regime that constantly t0rtures and k1lls them with impunity. You cannot have both. And we don’t need any “investigations” into a criminal organization that has all the powers to hide its crimes. It’s the digital age now and there are mountains of proof. There are no excuses left. Every day that this Regime remains in power, is paid for with the bl00d of completely innocent Iranians.
Some people say that there were as many as 100,000 protesters who participated, yet this 12-minute documentary is the only existing film of the March 1979 Women’s protests in Iran. 🤨 That’s how quickly and aggressively Khomeini’s Regime began censoring and silencing the truth. From Day 1, the Islamic Regime has been lying and they haven’t stopped since. This short film was made by the militant French feminist group, Psychoanalysis and Politics, in collaboration with Iranian women. For me, it is a great testament to the importance of solidarity amongst women’s liberation movements around the world – especially when it comes to reporting on (and FOR) people who are trapped in a severely authoritarian country against their will. Were it not for the support of these fellow women/humans who had their freedom of speech, we would have none of this important historical record. (If only @npr ‘s peanut butter lady had a shred of the integrity 🙄) People in Iran still don’t have the option to speak for themselves without paying with their lives. That’s why we have to keep speaking up for them. This Regime is full of smoke and mirrors, and it should be exposed for exactly what it is and always has been: a brutal, incompetent dictatorship disguised as a “theocratic democracy” (as tho that’s even a thing lol) I’m gonna post some shorter excerpts of this film later, because I know everyone has a short attention span. But again, it’s rare footage and only 12 mins long so I recommend the whole thing. 📷: via @retrofuturistnomad
March 7, 1979: Before even having a government set up or a “constitution” written, Khomeini announces that all women have to wear a hijab. March 8, 1979: Iranian women say “NO” and march in the streets by the tens of thousands. March 9, 2023: Iranians are still fighting with their lives to be heard, while the rest of the free world pretends the Islamic Regime isn’t a definitively fascist dictatorship. 📷: photo of Iranian actress who participated in the 1979 women’s protests (someone pls tell me her name!! It’s driving me crazy that I can’t find it) seen here standing up to one of Khomeini’s unhinged Neanderthal mullahs. Photo by Iranian photographer Hengameh Golestan.
I’m gonna share a few more pics/videos from the March 1979 Women’s protests in Iran because the Islamic Regime destroyed most evidence of it (as it does with all of its crimes), so I feel some duty to share what little was able to survive. Proof that Iranian women have been fighting this dictatorship since Day 1. And proof that the Islamic Regime has been lying about it since Day 1. 44 years later, thousands upon thousands of Iranians killed in mass executions, hundreds of thousands killed in an 8 yr long politically-motivated and genocidal war, another several hundred thousand imprisoned and brutalized, millions exiled, generations traumatized, and the women of Iran are still showing up – bruised and bloody and exhausted – asking for the same damn things. Why are they still not being heard? Why do they get NO say? Their message has always been loud and clear and hasn’t changed in 44 damn years. The sign held by the Iranian woman in the photo reads: “Tyranny is tyranny. It is condemned in any form.” 📷: @retrofuturistnomad

The incredible photo of the amazing Chilean girl from my last thread really reminded me of this iconic scene from the film “Valerie and Her Week of Wonders”

The year is 2023 and ALL OVER THE WORLD women are still fighting for equal rights to men. From left to right: US, Chile, Palestine, Bolivia, UK, Brazil, Sweden, South Korea, Sudan, & Mexico. What are these cis hetero men so afraid of??? They are SO terrified of our existence and our bodies that they have to cover us up and cut our worth in half. They are SO threatened by us that they beat, r@pe and oppress us all over the damn world. The time has come for the legalization of violence and oppression against women to be another disgraceful relic of the past. Why do women have to fight this hard? It’s 2023! We should be living in futuristic times. Or modern times at least! Instead, we’re being FORCED to live in the dark ages of the past. These men need to let it go. IT IS OVER. 📷: Images from my fave decolonizers @muchachafanzine 🥰
