Em toda minha vida eu sempre tive o orgulho e a honra de receber muito carinho e respeito em todos os lugares que estive, principalmente do povo brasileiro.
Durante a Copa do Mundo, uma declaração minha foi feita dentro de um contexto, mas infelizmente se espalhou como uma crítica a todo o povo. Nunca foi essa a minha intenção. Nem poderia ser, principalmente pelo fato do povo brasileiro ter sempre me tratado com muito amor. Eu me referia apenas às pessoas que, naquele momento, torciam contra um ídolo da Seleção. Errei na forma deselegante que citei um amigo, mas já me desculpei, seguimos juntos em frente.
Essa declaração novamente foi lembrada agora por ocasião do falecimento e velório do nosso querido Rei Pelé, pessoa que tenho uma admiração enorme, e que recebi de suas mãos o maior prêmio individual da minha carreira. Naquela noite, disse que só mesmo ele poderia tornar aquele momento ainda melhor. Como brasileiro e amante do futebol, meu respeito e admiração permanecerão e sinto demais não ter ido para Santos.
Tive a oportunidade de homenagear o Rei em vida algumas vezes, entre elas, uma conversa apenas entre nós, promovida gentilmente por seu filho. Foi mais um momento especial, entre outros, que guardarei em meu coração.
Durante a Copa do Mundo, propus ao presidente da FIFA a atribuição do nome Pelé a um dos prêmios concedidos pela FIFA na sua gala anual e torço para que assim aconteça.
Minha solidariedade e respeito a sua família são eternos, assim como a sua história, as homenagens e reconhecimento são feitos de diversas formas. O dever continua, e continuarei trabalhando pelo desenvolvimento do futebol brasileiro, apoiando as próximas gerações, afinal, além do reconhecimento, o legado do rei passa pela continuidade.
Por fim, gostaria de ressaltar meu amor pelo Brasil, pelo povo brasileiro e agradecer todo o enorme carinho que sempre recebi de todos vocês.
