Danielle Fishel Instagram – My family said our final goodbyes to our most beloved Papa Joe yesterday. He was 99 (and a half!) years old and went peacefully in his sleep on the morning of March 4th. Hard to ask for much more than that.

I shared a story at the service yesterday that I wanted to share with all of you. My 3.5 year old son Adler had a wonderful relationship with Papa (and my youngest son gets his middle name, Joseph, from him) and would often pretend to be Papa when we make believe play. In those times, Adler would hunch over and ask for help walking and call for his cane. “Help me, I’m Papa” he would say as he bent over and held one of our hands in one of his and the other hand pretended to use a cane while walking across the room. He played Papa this way dozens of times over the years but the day after Papa died, that changed for the first time. We hadn’t told Adler that Papa had passed or explained anything about death to him and on Sunday night, March 5th we were putting Adler to bed when he said “Daddy, put my fireman’s hat on. You be a fireman and I’m Papa. Save me from a fire.” Jensen went to get Adler fireman’s hat and I said “okay, Papa! Do you have your cane?” And Adler looked down at his arms and his body and in his sweet little voice said “No, Mommy. My boo boos are all better now! I don’t need my cane. I can walk!” Jensen and I shot each other a look and I repeated, “Are you sure you don’t have your cane?” Adler said, “nope. All better now.”

We miss you Papa but I’m happy you’re all better now. Thank you for the message and please keep them coming. ❤️
