“A realistic guide to becoming an astronaut at a young age” & my mind is blown 📖 Firstly, it’s an easy read. A complex idea 💡 made simple = genius #einstein Secondly, I just bloody love it. A valiant guide emboldening our younger generation to fuel 🔥 their passion fearlessly & ultimately NOT to allow anyone to deter you from following a dream/setting a high goal/ambition.
*
What gives it an edge is the structure & layout; the book chaperones the reader & not in a patronising way. Plus, Carson isn’t afraid to address the harsh reality of the dangers involved in this career field. Nothing can really “prepare” for this category of “unknown” – but there are certain situations/scenarios & an education (mentally & physically) to help build a person – skydiving 🪂, piloting planes, scuba diving – all 3 of which Alyssa writes is her goal to achieve certification & license.
*
Carson highlights the “free stuff” online too – encouraging reading, listening & learning from those that have/do; her approach is on point & all encompassing.
*
Parts of the book reminded me of my own “approach” to becoming an actress at a young age. This book isn’t just for wannabe astronauts. Possibly a metaphoric blueprint for anyone pursuing a dream/goal; strategy, endurance, perseverance. The guidance, to some degree, is adaptable & useful for all go-getters!! So go get yaself a copy.
💫
Step by step #alyssacarson talks her reader through the journey which every young #spaceenthusiast will face, navigating the “what to do’s” to become an astronaut. Carson is the youngest astronaut in training & uses her own experiences to help other young people comprehend some of the how’s, if’s and but’s. The book is informative, balanced & I think it’s a real gem 💎 🪐 – utterly inspiring & I recommend it with zero hesitation! #bookrecommendations #space

#psiloveyou is a comforting read ♥️ 🫖 despite the subject of great loss.
Holly (protagonist) loses her soulmate/high school sweetheart, Gerry, to a brain tumour. His death (the antagonist) ultimately revels in its role throughout.
BUT, dear Gerry has left his darling Holly an unthinkable gift 🎁 On her first birthday without him, the big 3-0, she opens a letter ✉️ – from him! For the next 10 months, despite no longer being in the realm of planet Earth 🌍 he has pre-planned activities, adventures & ultimately “guidance” through that first horrific year of grief 🥹 ^*Spoiler alert – he even books her & her mates a holiday! 🌊 ☀️
It’s a profound concept & the book is different enough from the movie to 💯 recommend reading it 📖 – even if (like me!) you’ve seen the film 12x over haha. It’s not the 1st time I’ve opened this book either!
Though far fetched at times, to heighten the entertainment, that’s exactly why I love it. Ahern narrates something lighthearted with a clever touch of comedy 🎭 during a heavy (& heart wrenching situation) without negating the dreaded weight that comes with the death of a loved one.
Main message, easier said than done, is life goes on & it’s for living 💥
Holly’s one of four siblings – each very different from one & other – which adds further colour & texture to the novel. Plus, she has two fabulous girlfriends 👯♀️ who are given their own stories too! I liked that each of Ahern’s characters had their own arc, with out stealing the show from Holly – the ultimate Karaoke 🎤 Queen 👸 Princess of clumsiness.
I won’t give too much away, but if you want an easy & enchanting read this summer, go grab yaself a copy!
PS 😜 it’s set in #ireland where we filmed @historyvikings – a place forever close to my heart ❤️ I’m reading #themarblecollector next!
PPS – @official_ceceliaahern sorry I realise I’ve used an i instead of an e in your name!

Yes, ever & anon, I take my beak 🐦 out of a book & watch some good old fashioned tv! But, find it hard to concentrate UNLESS it’s something like TASKMASTER (or @historyvikings I suppose I should say 😂) which 💯 holds my attention. I fcking love TM! When my health permits I’d like to go on the show to compete. Or perhaps @littlealexhorne can take on a challenge & set remote tasks from bed/home for me. I’d be the first virtual chronically sick contestant! Double entendre;I vouch to be outstandingly impressive 😂 Enough about M.E – what is TASKMASTER & why’s it so damn good? It’s basically famous people making other famous people do stupid things (competitively) & it’s shockingly captivating. I’m not blowing smoke 💨 up anyones woohoo here, the show is incredible & always makes us laugh out loud. Davies judges the performances (mainly comedy peeps) & scores points 😂 with the odd interjection from Horne – the mastermind behind the tasks. I like the point system breaking traditional rules; Davies scores what he wants/feels in the moment 😂 Although I jibed the celebs are doing “stupid” things, the tasks are actually often v.creative requiring lateral thinking/problem solving to complete. Fun to watch! Sometimes it’s a group task, singles or twos. I have the board game too #fangirl but haven’t played yet. Oh wow I just read “Alex Horne’s initial plan was to carry out the tasks in the comedians’ houses” 😂 pop over for a cuppa mate; not a comedienne but actress’ll do. Give this show a watch! 5/5 ⭐️ chucklesome, unique, clever! #tvshowrecommendation

It is raining 🌧️ & windy outside & I like the sound! Perfect outer space reading ambience 😂 Since being inspired by #womeninspace today I decided to get some of my old space books 📚 from the bookshelf & delve into the #wondersoftheuniverse – this one was gifted to me (many moons ago) by a little boy I used to nanny! Magic photographs & paired with mind blowing facts about outer space 🪐 & astrophysics (& the rest!) I couldn’t recommend it enough. It’s a huge beautiful hardback too. Then, the almost pocket size (if Mary Poppins had a pocket 😬 😂) Collins Nature Guides UNIVERSE from the Big Bang to Black Holes, is such a cool unassuming lil’ guide to how the universe works, fully illustrated, sectioning the planets, Earth, Moon, Sun, Galaxies 🌌 & so much more! The other book is 50 ideas you really need to know UNIVERSE & isn’t as colourful as the aforementioned – black & white – but I love it as much – I’m learning new words, plus I really like some of the quotes weaved in! Key concepts of cosmology & basic principles of astronomy 🔭 are addressed in detail. I don’t have enough space (pun intended) to review 3 books in one post, so this is more of a general #bookrecommendations with a sprinkle of inspiration (I hope!) for you to #readmorebooks about OUTER SPACE! 💥 trust me, you will not regret it…

A good friend sent me this book & wrote inside, “Jennie, you are one of the Eric’s of the world.” It’s a curious short story with charming illustrations to accompany an effortless narrative. Not entirely sure what my mate meant – but I have an idea & I really like Eric. A quirky foreign exchange visitor (“Eric”) is hosted by a family who can’t comprehend why he’s “choosing” to sleep in the pantry rather than their guest bedroom? The themes are cultural misunderstanding, alienation, familiarity & of course “exchange” – apparently this volume is part of Tales of Outer Suburbia, which I would (now, since meeting Eric!) quite like to get my paws on 😂 There’s that saying, “a picture paints a thousand words,” well that’s the magic of how this story ends… glittered with symbolism & metaphors, it’s a clever page turner that can make an impact for ALL ages ♥️ If I remind my friend of Eric, I’m proud. Loved reading this & have read a few times over since receiving. It’s just precious. #bookreview #bookstagramuk #readersofinstagram – A different friend just read this review & has text me – “Not even read Eric, but someone who is found in the pantry when everyone else is sleeping does sound like you 🤣🤣🤣” – not sure what to say… 🤔 🥘 🍎 🍱 ♥️ 😆 read this beautiful book!

Kya “The Marsh Girl” is judged harshly by the townspeople of Barkley Cove. Deserted at a young age in a shack in the marshes, an adult should’ve seen to it that she was taken care of. Close enough to “civilisation” to be their gossip, far away enough to turn a blind eye. This is about abandonment; Family & the lack of, The Mother & Mother Nature, & (unexpectedly) the power of learning to read 😳 📚 & potential of falling in love!
Arguably, those who were suppose to care for Kya, up sticks on the grounds of self-preservation/their own survival. But, who has got this little girls back? Well, the Seagulls; Kya has a soul-stirring connection to nature which lights up almost every page! She maintains a few human ally’s too – some kindhearted, others not so much; Jumpin, owner of the gas & bait shop & his wife Mabel, “Our church can come up wif some clothes, other things for her,” fall into the compassionate category; as does Tate, her brother Jodie’s old pal, who teaches Kya to read 😉 & cultivates her natural flare for science. The bond between Tate & Kya is the backbone of this masterpiece but it’s her connection to the marsh which really fleshes out the story.
Despite her strength, Kya is young/naive. Predators like Chase Andrews, can smell this. As wonderful as Tate is (& he really is) he has some growing-up to do & regrettably for a period of time goes AWOL; Chase Andrews, stereotypical quarterback “player” from town utilises & uses Kya during Tate’s absence. When Andrews is found dead in the marsh, a darker animalistic “coming-of-age” tale surfaces. Kya, the accused, once wild & free, is behind bars & under the scrutiny of a small minded town who want accountability. Set between the 1950s & 70s, in North Carolina, USA – racism, segregation & “labelling” are rooted in the Deep South narrative. The question is, will there be growth? 🐛 🦋 Weaved into this, is poetry, a plot TWIST & a profound account of the marsh. Kya actually becomes a published writer. Do not underestimate The Marsh Girl. Beautifully orchestrated unique murder mystery. 5/5 – SWIPE for the new front cover 😂 #bookreview

#beforethecoffeegetscold #bookreview – A unique story! I liked it. My instinct? Prob work better as a script/stage play rather than a book. Oh OK, just researched the author – Toshikazu Kawaguchi (in Japanese: 川口 俊 和) is a playwright, theatre director & producer; makes sense! Loss, acceptance & letting go are the main concepts. There are 4 stories/acts, told one after the other, taking place within an unsuspecting cafe in Tokyo! The fact it’s so confined, is partly why I visualised it as a piece of theatre. A set designer could really have fun creating “Funiculi Funicula” – the coffee shop – & maybe even brew real coffee for the audience members?!
With a magical twist, the customers, if they do so wish, can embrace the opportunity to time-travel 🕰️ ♥️ on one of the chairs 🪑 BUT with a few obscure (yet clearly spelled out!) “rules” – which might put someone off bothering 😂 such as, & in no particular order… You can’t actually leave the cafe & (more specifically) you cannot get up from the seat you’re sat in! You MUST come back to the present BEFORE THE COFFEE ☕️ gets cold 🙃 & (perhaps the most unappealing?) under NO circumstances are you ever actually able to change your own or anyone else’s FATE.
So, ya might think well what’s the point?
On top of all of that, a bloody GHOST occupies the seat, so you gotta wait for her to need the loo, before you can travel. It’s quirky & unusual but deals with very human emotions at its core making it easy to connect to. Events of our past affect how we respond in the present 🤔 Although a death is final & an illness such as Alzheimer’s (in the book) remains incurable – “returning” to the past can alter the heart ❤️ & perhaps aid the way in which someone heals, thereafter, moving forward… talking of forward… towards the end of the book it is revealed one can also travel into the future, with another set of rules & regulations. Rather than give a brief synopsis of the characters & their personal journeys, I encourage you to go read the book with an open mind. If you have experienced loss/trauma it may just provide a whimsical albeit welcomed perspective #bookstagram 💥 ☕️

Love, lust, hatred, murder. Bullying & control. Sprinkle some domestic abuse (& teenage angst!) into the cauldron & we’re cookin up Thread Needle 🪡 🌙 Do not forget the hefty ladle of Witchcraft! Love this book. Right up my street & set in my fave City, London! A curse hangs over Anna – protagonist – & as her 16th birthday approaches, she unravels a web of lies; spun largely by her “caretaker,” Aunt Vivienne.
The deception revolves around the stabbing of her Mother, Aunts sister, & suicide of her Father. The themes are bold with oppression, deceit & dirty family secrets at the heart of it. But it’s not all doom & gloom. There’s humour, a coming-of-age vibe to it & new friendship(s) forged – just be mindful who you trust.
Anna attends a standard city school where she attempts to lay low & float through year 11 as “a nobody,” but her popularity is on the cusp of great change. A charismatic young Effie & charming Attis come together as a package (or a grenade?) stirring up mischief & ultimately start a coven! Most of the students do not have any hidden powers – some girls are just Bitches not Witches 😂 – but Effie & Attis are fast to recruit the few who can cast spells. I won’t give much away because I don’t want to ruin the flight 🧹
This is the 1st book in #carithomas Language of Magic series – I’m hooked.
Setting it in London provides immediate enchantment 🪄 & gets vamped up a notch (or ten!) for hidden within the boroughs are 🤫 entries to other places…
Thomas introduces Anna (& the reader!) to a London “where libraries made of books breathe dusty pages beneath the city and witch clubs serve up magical cocktails and vintage shops sell memories.” As the author reinstates this is “A world where magic gleams both light and very, very dark.” Not for the faint-hearted. Although Anna has always known she’s a witch, her Aunt is a Binder & has done her utmost to curb Anna’s powers; why? An example of the level of cruelty is if Anna gets too lippy the old Aunt sews 🧵 her nieces mouth shut 🤐 Another is the slow poising of Anna’s milk… Sacrifice, hexes & manipulation drive the narrative. 4.8/5 #bookstagram #bookreview

The most beautiful book I own. A few days ago, I curled up on my sofa re-reading it – Labradors (finally!) at rest across my lap. My friend text me, “it’s on tele, now!” 💫 the serendipity. I’m more of a reader than a watcher, but the movie has been cleverly translated. I bought 2 more copies for loved ones. A strong yet gentle story glittered with quotes about friendship, self-worth, kindness, perspective, love & courage – it captures that raw complexity of human feelings – then somehow simplifies (& pacifies) the knots of emotion. Pretty genius. Most of us have experienced being, well, just a little bit lost & this is addressed in such a helpful & ♥️ warming way. Each quote finds a slightly different part of me & there’s a gorgeous pen & ink drawing connected. This Christmas 🎄 has been good – I’m lucky – but a monumental personal loss landed unexpectedly at the heart of my 2022… With all the ups & downs in life, it’s vital to find something like this book to uplift the spirit & hug the soul. I am yet to read from start to finish & I don’t know if reading in chronological order is something I’ll ever do? I tend to dip in & out of it, choosing each page at random, swept ever so slightly off my tootsies 👣 by the wisdom, each time. There should be a copy in every persons home 🎁 ♥️ #charliemackesy #bookstagram #reading #artistsoninstagram #books
