Prob work better as a script/stage play rather than a book. Oh OK, just researched the author - Toshikazu Kawaguchi (in Japanese: 川口 俊 和) is a playwright, theatre director & producer; makes sense! Loss, acceptance & letting go are the main concepts. There are 4 stories/acts, told one after the other, taking place within an unsuspecting cafe in Tokyo! The fact it’s so confined, is partly why I visualised it as a piece of theatre. A set designer could really have fun creating “Funiculi Funicula” - the coffee shop - & maybe even brew real coffee for the audience members?! With a magical twist, the customers, if they do so wish, can embrace the opportunity to time-travel 🕰️ ♥️ on one of the chairs 🪑 BUT with a few obscure (yet clearly spelled out!) “rules” - which might put someone off bothering 😂 such as, & in no particular order… You can’t actually leave the cafe & (more specifically) you cannot get up from the seat you’re sat in! You MUST come back to the present BEFORE THE COFFEE ☕️ gets cold 🙃 & (perhaps the most unappealing?) under NO circumstances are you ever actually able to change your own or anyone else’s FATE. So, ya might think well what’s the point? On top of all of that, a bloody GHOST occupies the seat, so you gotta wait for her to need the loo, before you can travel. It’s quirky & unusual but deals with very human emotions at its core making it easy to connect to. Events of our past affect how we respond in the present 🤔 Although a death is final & an illness such as Alzheimer’s (in the book) remains incurable - “returning” to the past can alter the heart ❤️ & perhaps aid the way in which someone heals, thereafter, moving forward… talking of forward… towards the end of the book it is revealed one can also travel into the future, with another set of rules & regulations. Rather than give a brief synopsis of the characters & their personal journeys, I encourage you to go read the book with an open mind. If you have experienced loss/trauma it may just provide a whimsical albeit welcomed perspective #bookstagram 💥 ☕️

Jennie Jacques Instagram – Love, lust, hatred, murder. Bullying & control. Sprinkle some domestic abuse (& teenage angst!) into the cauldron & we’re cookin up Thread Needle 🪡 🌙 Do not forget the hefty ladle of Witchcraft! Love this book. Right up my street & set in my fave City, London! A curse hangs over Anna – protagonist – & as her 16th birthday approaches, she unravels a web of lies; spun largely by her “caretaker,” Aunt Vivienne.
The deception revolves around the stabbing of her Mother, Aunts sister, & suicide of her Father. The themes are bold with oppression, deceit & dirty family secrets at the heart of it. But it’s not all doom & gloom. There’s humour, a coming-of-age vibe to it & new friendship(s) forged – just be mindful who you trust.
Anna attends a standard city school where she attempts to lay low & float through year 11 as “a nobody,” but her popularity is on the cusp of great change. A charismatic young Effie & charming Attis come together as a package (or a grenade?) stirring up mischief & ultimately start a coven! Most of the students do not have any hidden powers – some girls are just Bitches not Witches 😂 – but Effie & Attis are fast to recruit the few who can cast spells. I won’t give much away because I don’t want to ruin the flight 🧹
This is the 1st book in #carithomas Language of Magic series – I’m hooked.
Setting it in London provides immediate enchantment 🪄 & gets vamped up a notch (or ten!) for hidden within the boroughs are 🤫 entries to other places…
Thomas introduces Anna (& the reader!) to a London “where libraries made of books breathe dusty pages beneath the city and witch clubs serve up magical cocktails and vintage shops sell memories.” As the author reinstates this is “A world where magic gleams both light and very, very dark.” Not for the faint-hearted. Although Anna has always known she’s a witch, her Aunt is a Binder & has done her utmost to curb Anna’s powers; why? An example of the level of cruelty is if Anna gets too lippy the old Aunt sews 🧵 her nieces mouth shut 🤐 Another is the slow poising of Anna’s milk… Sacrifice, hexes & manipulation drive the narrative. 4.8/5 #bookstagram #bookreview
Jennie Jacques Instagram – The most beautiful book I own. A few days ago, I curled up on my sofa re-reading it – Labradors (finally!) at rest across my lap. My friend text me, “it’s on tele, now!” 💫 the serendipity. I’m more of a reader than a watcher, but the movie has been cleverly translated. I bought 2 more copies for loved ones. A strong yet gentle story glittered with quotes about friendship, self-worth, kindness, perspective, love & courage – it captures that raw complexity of human feelings – then somehow simplifies (& pacifies) the knots of emotion. Pretty genius. Most of us have experienced being, well, just a little bit lost & this is addressed in such a helpful & ♥️ warming way. Each quote finds a slightly different part of me & there’s a gorgeous pen & ink drawing connected. This Christmas 🎄 has been good – I’m lucky – but a monumental personal loss landed unexpectedly at the heart of my 2022… With all the ups & downs in life, it’s vital to find something like this book to uplift the spirit & hug the soul. I am yet to read from start to finish & I don’t know if reading in chronological order is something I’ll ever do? I tend to dip in & out of it, choosing each page at random, swept ever so slightly off my tootsies 👣 by the wisdom, each time. There should be a copy in every persons home 🎁 ♥️ #charliemackesy #bookstagram #reading #artistsoninstagram #books
