In this clip, Yashoda is telling Krishna not to go out because the animals in the forest will scare him. She adds details on how he will be swallowed by an animal and how she will later find him crying inside the stomach of some big animal. (I’m sure many parents tell their children stories like this to keep them from doing some things 🤣) But Krishna is adamant and says that all the animals are his friends. I’ve had 7 performances , taken about 12 flights, some trains, 2 days journey by car, performed 4 different shows (this means that I have had to continuously rehearse 5 hrs worth of performance material), been in 9 different cities, taught 5 workshops and shot for 3 brand films, in the last 3 weeks. Im going to land in bangalore and go straight to set, to shoot for a music video that I’m working on. Yes - I’m exhausted. But strangely enough- I’m alright. I’ve kept my training going so that I’m strong every show. I’ve read two books to keep my mind alive… and I’m filling every spare moment with family time. I’m thankful for everything that I have… thankful for dance. But please remember that it is not as glamorous as it looks. Someone asked me if I was innately talented. Like if I was inclined to dance from a young age. Yes I liked dancing. But “talent” I think in any field is a way of summing up millions of hours of practice… repetition… self assessment… critique.. I watch my videos after a show and rip them apart for mistakes - Every single show. While dancing, in performance , I’m supremely content. But once it is done, I watch to see what I can do better. This is a ritual… to see what went wrong.. where… how… why? What more must I do? It was lovely to be in Surat! Thanks to @taalgroupsurat for having me ♥️ truly a pleasure. I tried my best to adapt to an audience that was seating in the round. Turning and changing choreography. 😊 I need to work on this a little bit more. It’s hard to do it at the spur of the moment. Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram - Day 43: #100daysofinnergrowth Yesterday, Kong went after a snake. He smelled the snake in the front yard (on our farm) from over 50 ft away and ran to find it. It took me a minute to realise what he was doing and I ran after him. When I saw the big snake, I was so terrified of what might happen to kong and I was screaming to make him back off. I finally got hold of kong and pulled him away from the snake. We were all 1 ft apart, the snake, Kong and I. Later I found through google images that it was probably a rat snake which is non venomous. But there are also cobras and vipers on our farm and I don’t really know enough to recognise which snake it is so quickly - and would never take the risk. After the incident, kong just came back and sat next to me and fell asleep. I was thinking about how simple it is with animals and even children. They will put their life at risk and do something for someone they love, with no thought of “something owed” or an expected obligation. I’m a part of his pack , and I must be protected. It’s that simple. He just does what has to be done. The action was so philosophical and Vedantic in a way that I cannot explain. Made me think about it all the way home. I wish I can also learn to be like that. Duty bound - in a simple clear manner. Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram - This is one of my most favourite pictures of my mom and dad. They were laughing at me… 😊 I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea of “sustainable living” that seems to be in everyone’s vocabulary. People are thinking about clothes, and food and reusable plastic etc , but I think it’s much more than that. It’s a mindset. A mindset that my parents had. They lead simple lives. My father had a single closet of clothing when he passed on. Neatly folded, with hardly any belongings. As children, we were taught to take only one tissue from a box, if we absolutely needed it. We had bucket baths often and used the shower sparingly. We used thin cotton towels for a bath, so it wouldn’t waste water when being washed. My dad would repeatedly turn off the tap when I was brushing my teeth. Both my parents have clothes that are more than ten years old. They were never swayed by fashion, and never bought new clothes unless something was completely worn out. They reused old clothes as mopping cloths. My mother will never throw away a glass bottle/ a plastic bag/ a paper bag. Everything is valued and respected and reused. She always cooks with vegetables that are currently in season, so that there is no waste in cold storage etc. This is a lifestyle. It is not something that they did to save money. They just did it because they felt it was right. If I look at my life, I’m sure I emulate some of these values, but a lot of us in my generation don’t consider these things. Most of it has become essential to our lifestyle, a part of the luxuries that we must have. I have a lot of clothes! I always take a shower. I definitely feel guilt when taking that extra tissue, but I take it anyway. Just my thoughts for the morning after meeting my mother. A reminder to myself … to remember that sustainable living is about caring and respecting everything and everyone. Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram - Day 25: #100daysofinnergrowth I have been a part of Shivaratri celebrations, participating in dance and music for as long as I can remember. Shiva has been depicted in stories, song and dance in many different ways. Often I would see Shiva depicted as being angry, with his third eye open, dancing full of rage. And it took me a long time to realise that this anger was not personal. The rage that shiva is shown to have is not a personal rage like a human has, because Shiva is not a human being. Shiva / Ishwara represents the all pervasive consciousness. His dance is the dance of the cosmos and the depicted rage is the dissolution of the material universe. I suppose Shiva is shown to have ‘Rage ‘ - because we as humans understand emotion. And rage in reality destroys and ends a lot! Composure, peace, relationships…. Etc But it is a limited human quality superimposed on something that has no limit. As a tribute to realising this concept of “rage” in Shiva, I want to see whether I can remain without raising my voice. This is a hard one for sure. I can’t say, that I won’t get upset. That’s too far a reach. Even if I know the futility of getting upset in retrospect, the emotion always seems to get the better of me in the most inappropriate moments. So for now…. I want to try to control the physical outcome of that emotion. So I will sincerely try not to raise my voice even when I’m upset. Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram - Although the year has been far from normal - I lost my father, I’ve had no live performances, my studio is barely functional, and I’ve had the hardest year of my life - I realise that I have a lot to be thankful for. I starting learning music again, I learned diving, I had a lot of time to think - so I wrote a book. I also have learned a lot about filmmaking, directing, choreography for film. I have created a learning platform online that has forced me to structure my teaching practice with a lot of thought and consideration. Many of my students have grown despite the challenges of the online platform. I have a beautiful home and a loving family. I certainly hope that performances on stage will return will full vigour, but I know nothing will ever be the same again. I’ve had 7 performances , taken about 12 flights, some trains, 2 days journey by car, performed 4 different shows (this means that I have had to continuously rehearse 5 hrs worth of performance material), been in 9 different cities, taught 5 workshops and shot for 3 brand films, in the last 3 weeks. Im going to land in bangalore and go straight to set, to shoot for a music video that I’m working on. Yes - I’m exhausted. But strangely enough- I’m alright. I’ve kept my training going so that I’m strong every show. I’ve read two books to keep my mind alive… and I’m filling every spare moment with family time. I’m thankful for everything that I have… thankful for dance. But please remember that it is not as glamorous as it looks. Someone asked me if I was innately talented. Like if I was inclined to dance from a young age. Yes I liked dancing. But “talent” I think in any field is a way of summing up millions of hours of practice… repetition… self assessment… critique.. I watch my videos after a show and rip them apart for mistakes - Every single show. While dancing, in performance , I’m supremely content. But once it is done, I watch to see what I can do better. This is a ritual… to see what went wrong.. where… how… why? What more must I do? It was lovely to be in Surat! Thanks to @taalgroupsurat for having me ♥️ truly a pleasure. I tried my best to adapt to an audience that was seating in the round. Turning and changing choreography. 😊 I need to work on this a little bit more. It’s hard to do it at the spur of the moment. He smelled the snake in the front yard (on our farm) from over 50 ft away and ran to find it. It took me a minute to realise what he was doing and I ran after him. When I saw the big snake, I was so terrified of what might happen to kong and I was screaming to make him back off. I finally got hold of kong and pulled him away from the snake. We were all 1 ft apart, the snake, Kong and I. Later I found through google images that it was probably a rat snake which is non venomous. But there are also cobras and vipers on our farm and I don’t really know enough to recognise which snake it is so quickly - and would never take the risk. After the incident, kong just came back and sat next to me and fell asleep. I was thinking about how simple it is with animals and even children. They will put their life at risk and do something for someone they love, with no thought of “something owed” or an expected obligation. I’m a part of his pack , and I must be protected. It’s that simple. He just does what has to be done. The action was so philosophical and Vedantic in a way that I cannot explain. Made me think about it all the way home. I wish I can also learn to be like that. Duty bound - in a simple clear manner. After the incident, kong just came back and sat next to me and fell asleep. I was thinking about how simple it is with animals and even children. They will put their life at risk and do something for someone they love, with no thought of “something owed” or an expected obligation. I’m a part of his pack , and I must be protected. It’s that simple. He just does what has to be done. The action was so philosophical and Vedantic in a way that I cannot explain. Made me think about it all the way home. They were laughing at me… 😊 I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea of “sustainable living” that seems to be in everyone’s vocabulary. People are thinking about clothes, and food and reusable plastic etc , but I think it’s much more than that. It’s a mindset. A mindset that my parents had. They lead simple lives. My father had a single closet of clothing when he passed on. Neatly folded, with hardly any belongings. As children, we were taught to take only one tissue from a box, if we absolutely needed it. We had bucket baths often and used the shower sparingly. We used thin cotton towels for a bath, so it wouldn’t waste water when being washed. My dad would repeatedly turn off the tap when I was brushing my teeth. Both my parents have clothes that are more than ten years old. They were never swayed by fashion, and never bought new clothes unless something was completely worn out. They reused old clothes as mopping cloths. My mother will never throw away a glass bottle/ a plastic bag/ a paper bag. Everything is valued and respected and reused. She always cooks with vegetables that are currently in season, so that there is no waste in cold storage etc. This is a lifestyle. It is not something that they did to save money. They just did it because they felt it was right. If I look at my life, I’m sure I emulate some of these values, but a lot of us in my generation don’t consider these things. Most of it has become essential to our lifestyle, a part of the luxuries that we must have. I have a lot of clothes! I always take a shower. I definitely feel guilt when taking that extra tissue, but I take it anyway. Just my thoughts for the morning after meeting my mother. A reminder to myself … to remember that sustainable living is about caring and respecting everything and everyone. Shiva has been depicted in stories, song and dance in many different ways. Often I would see Shiva depicted as being angry, with his third eye open, dancing full of rage. And it took me a long time to realise that this anger was not personal. The rage that shiva is shown to have is not a personal rage like a human has, because Shiva is not a human being. Shiva / Ishwara represents the all pervasive consciousness. His dance is the dance of the cosmos and the depicted rage is the dissolution of the material universe. I suppose Shiva is shown to have ‘Rage ‘ - because we as humans understand emotion. And rage in reality destroys and ends a lot! Composure, peace, relationships…. Etc But it is a limited human quality superimposed on something that has no limit. As a tribute to realising this concept of “rage” in Shiva, I want to see whether I can remain without raising my voice. This is a hard one for sure. I can’t say, that I won’t get upset. That’s too far a reach. Even if I know the futility of getting upset in retrospect, the emotion always seems to get the better of me in the most inappropriate moments. So for now…. I want to try to control the physical outcome of that emotion. So I will sincerely try not to raise my voice even when I’m upset.
