This brillant, kind, exceptional man came into my life when I was 7.
He has become the most phenomenal father to me and grand-father to my children.
Richard has fought against injustice all his life; fascism, racism, sexism, homophobia, and later in life came to tackle the oppression of more than one in eight of us who are disabled. Richard had polio as a baby. He has fought to move mountains in making the world more equal: to make our education system be an inclusive one; in the sixties to unionise work places; as the London secretary of the largest teaching union to defend teachers who were sacked because of who they loved, or because they took an anti-racist stance.
A decade ago, Richard began the UK’s annual Disability History Month and last year instigated the re-starting of the Commonwealth Disabled People’s Forum at the UN, where he was elected General Secretary.
Last weekend my folks broke their 3 month lockdown to attend a #blm protest in #newingtongreen where Richard spoke about #colinroach and their campaign to keep #policeoutofschools in the 1980’s….
I want to say #happyfathersday and #grandfathersday to this incredible man.

Today is #internationalhumanrightsday – very proud of my dad Richard Rieser who launched #disabilityhistorymonth in the UK in 2010, with an aim to challenge disabilism, celebrate disabled activists who fought for equality in the past, and look towards progressive change for the future. Each year a different theme is explored – this year is Disability, Health and Well-being. Schools, colleges, councils, prisons, businesses, trade unions and theatres across Britain are all actively engaged with #ukdhm in bringing about change.
