The State of California’s lawsuit against Cisco Systems Inc will be going to mediation on May 2nd. The lawsuit accuses the Silicon Valley tech giant of permitting caste-based discrimination and creating a hostile workplace for a Dalit employee. In June of 2020, California sued Cisco for caste discrimination—marking the first time that an American corporation has been sued for discrimination on the basis of caste and sparking three years of historic conversation about caste equity in the United States. Read why Ashwini K.P., the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance at the United Nations, supports SB 403. She is the first Dalit woman to hold this role and deeply understands the pressing need to ban caste discrimination. Ashwini reminds us that all states have a “duty to legislate effectively in order to eliminate racial discrimination”. It’s simple: the passage of SB 403 is a matter of ensuring basic human rights to all Dalit peoples. The Special Rapporteur also writes, “Given the upcoming vote on this bill, I wish to remind the California Senate of their responsibilities under international law to provide protections against caste-based discrimination, as well as to enable safe public participation for caste-oppressed individuals in all processes to develop relevant policies and laws”. We are grateful for Special Rapporteur Ashwini K.P. ‘s support of our mission to end caste-based discrimination and we appreciate her bringing her Dalit feminist perspective to this issue. Happy Dalit History Month! With more and more people across the world working to implement caste equity protections than ever before, it definitely feels like we are making Dalit history. Seattle just banned caste discrimination and California may soon follow—these are major wins for our caste-oppressed community. In honor of these recent victories and the victories yet to come, we’re launching a Dalit History Month campaign to bring on 50 new monthly donors. This sustained support will help us carry out the most historic caste equity campaign of our lives and provide integral resources for Dalit organizers and their advocacy.
