Always taught me to stand up for my rights, always demanded I do my best, supported my playing rugby (my dad was dead against it), encouraged me to box, wanted to send me to boarding school (which I refused), wondered why I wolfed down my food (bacche, train pakadna hai kya?), never fought shy of expressing her opinion about my girlfriends, always thought my father sheltered us (my sister and me) too much, read Urdu poetry to us, slapped us memorably and hard when we stole apples from the neighbour’s orchard, ran with me in her arms and hailed a taxi to the hospital when I split my eyebrow at the age of 3, and…was always certain her second child (me) was also going to be a daughter. I like to think I gave her reason to overcome that disappointment. We all love our mothers. That love takes different forms but you can see it from outer space. I loved my mother too. And thank her for the world view she left me with. Many things have been added to it and subtracted from it, but her voice remains, clear as a bell, in my head : Rahul, come here and give me a hug. And I would. And I do.

Rahul Bose Instagram - Was the chief guest today at the (impressive) investiture ceremony of the prefects, head boy, head girls, house captains etc of my alma mater, #CathedralandJohnConnonSchool . It was held at the same venue (Birla Matushri Hall) as when I was invested a million years ago. Super nostalgic. Life comes a full circle. Was invited to school after the ceremony by the Principal, Vice Principal and a member of the Board of Governors. My niece, @alyaimsorry took this image of my sister @anubose189 (also an ex-Cathedralite) and me. Loved it enough to share it with you. My best wishes to the Class of 22-23. Rahul Bose Instagram - I was 8. He would take the morning off work and we’d go to watch test cricket at Wankhede. We used to enter from Marine Drive near Zaver Mahal. Park the car across the road and queue up to get into the stadium. The rule was simple : I had to always hold his index finger during the walk in. It used to be crowded but never suffocating. He had prepared my lunch box, water bottle and given me a cap for when the sun hit the west stand in the evening. My steps would quicken when I’d hear a roar from the crowds inside. The finger would restrain my speed. Up the stairs, into daylight and the thrill, the splendour of cricket bathed in sunshine with 20,000 people watching. It was only when we’d reached our seats that I was allowed to release the finger. I can never forget the sense of safety that finger gave me. It was as if once I held it I was cloaked in inter galactic protective armour. That’s the wonder of being the right kind of father. It makes your son Superman. This image was taken 22 years after those test match days. 22 years after a boy had experienced boundless love and kindness. Thank you, Baba. Rahul Bose Instagram - Late for #FathersDay - been busy with the Rugby 7s Nationals. Looking back (he died 15 years ago) the greatest thing my father gifted me is my (still imperfect) gender blindness. In the days when there were generally only two ‘accepted’ genders (and transgenders on the margins) in upper middle class Indian society, he shattered most conceptions of what a “man’s” or a “woman’s” role in a family should be. He cooked, mum didn’t. He shopped for the house, mum didn’t. He shopped for literally everything. From bhindi to Surf to freshly chopped mutton to Phenyl. I know. I went with him to do ‘baajaar’. Every evening our (the children’s) bedroom became the scene of the most ludicrous, fun games with him. (Mum wanted no part of this hooliganism.) Physical horsing around, imitation games, story telling. One evening would contain all that a child’s heart could hold. Massages to gently wake you on an exam day. Massages at the end of a day of cricket. Hugs full of Brylcreem, Old Spice and cigarette smoke. He looked after us like a bird looks after its young. His greatest metaphoric pleasure was flying miles in search of food and putting it in the mouths of his children. Like all fathers he had his favourite phases of our growing up. Our teenage years and beyond were not his favourite. The closeness remained but the massages grew shorter. As did the evening horsing around at the Bose Kids Bedroom Stadium. The hugs still remained as did his prawn cutlets, so maddeningly tasty on Sunday lunches. But for a boy who grew up (like most boys) adoring his father and getting masses of love from him everyday, my most clear, warm, fragrant memory is faithfully following his instructions to hold his index finger while we went weekly shopping for the house. ‘Never let go’ he would tell me. And why would I. Because when I held that finger I knew I was fully protected from the world and it’s cruelties. No rain could pierce it, no earthquake could separate us. It felt as secure as if I was hugging a tree trunk. If I have any wish on this day to all the children of this world it is, may you have a ‘Baba’ like my sister and I did. #RupenBose

Rahul Bose Instagram - There was a time when I went on a #SatyajitRay films watching spree and Soumitrada was in most of them. So working with him in #15ParkAvenue felt surreal. Needless to say I incessantly asked questions about cinema, Ray, his working style etc. He answered everything with generosity and warmth. Rahul Bose Instagram - For most this was an annus horribilis. I have to say for me it was one of the best years of my career. #Bullbul released in the early days of the pandemic (there I am on set, sitting with its massively talented director, @anvita_dee ) and it garnered me my first @filmfare award at the end of the year. In the middle there has been filming for an English series with @netflix_in , a Hindi series and a Bengali series. Very satisfying. So, a happy new year. Remember, you never know what the future holds. Sometimes it can surprise you extremely pleasantly. Cheers.

Rahul Bose Instagram - She pushed me to box for school, play rugby for the Bombay Gym. She opened the entire library of books at home for me when I turned 10. She taught me how to pick wild flowers for the house. And she never entered the kitchen. Gender equality? We breathed it. My friends thought she was way cooler than I was - they came over more to hang with her than with me. (Though, which mother makes her son wear a knit pullover with a bumblebee on it?) Park the car across the road and queue up to get into the stadium. The rule was simple : I had to always hold his index finger during the walk in. It used to be crowded but never suffocating. He had prepared my lunch box, water bottle and given me a cap for when the sun hit the west stand in the evening. My steps would quicken when I’d hear a roar from the crowds inside. The finger would restrain my speed. Up the stairs, into daylight and the thrill, the splendour of cricket bathed in sunshine with 20,000 people watching. It was only when we’d reached our seats that I was allowed to release the finger. I can never forget the sense of safety that finger gave me. It was as if once I held it I was cloaked in inter galactic protective armour. That’s the wonder of being the right kind of father. It makes your son Superman. Physical horsing around, imitation games, story telling. One evening would contain all that a child’s heart could hold. Massages to gently wake you on an exam day. Massages at the end of a day of cricket. Hugs full of Brylcreem, Old Spice and cigarette smoke. He looked after us like a bird looks after its young. His greatest metaphoric pleasure was flying miles in search of food and putting it in the mouths of his children. Like all fathers he had his favourite phases of our growing up. Our teenage years and beyond were not his favourite. The closeness remained but the massages grew shorter. As did the evening horsing around at the Bose Kids Bedroom Stadium.
