Daniel Brühl Instagram – It’s International Women’s Day today and I’d like to shine a light on the incredible work of my fellow advocates in the @worldfoodprogramme family, the @cholitasescaladoras. As an avid hiker and WFP Goodwill Ambassador, I stand inspired by these women mountaineers who are breaking gender stereotypes and fighting climate change on some of the biggest mountains in the world.
The Cholitas Escaladoras are a group of women mountaineers in Bolivia who scale peaks in their traditional attire. This photo is of them at the top of Sajama at 6,542 metres above sea level! Not only are they defying incredible heights, but they are also breaking stereotypes and shifting perceptions all while providing first-hand accounts of how climate-change is impacting their home and the food security of indigenous women.
Perhaps today (and every other day) the world can also take inspiration from the Cholitas Escaladoras Maya. For just as they’ve overcome immense odds to spotlight the struggles of the Aymara women and people, the world has its own mountain to climb in responding to climate change.
