HEY JUDE.
‘Hey Jude’ is Paul’s. It’s one of his masterpieces. He said it was written about Julian, my child. He knew I was splitting with Cyn and leaving Julian then. He was driving to visit me or Julian. I think it was just to see Julian to say ‘hi’ to him, because he’d been like an uncle, you know, he was always good with kids. And he came up with ‘Hey Jude’.
But I always heard it as a song to me. If you think about it, Yoko’s just come into the picture, he’s saying ‘Hey Jude / Hey John’. I mean, so I’m sounding like one of those fans that’s writing things into it. But you can hear it as a song to me. Although it’s also a song about him and Franny Schwartz at the time, too.
But you hear the lines ‘on your shoulder’ and all those things I always took personally because I was the one with a chip on my shoulder. And ‘go out and get her’ and forget everything else. So subconsciously I take it that he was saying, ‘go ahead’. On a conscious level he didn’t want me to go ahead. Subconsciously the angel in him was saying, ‘bless you.’ The devil in him didn’t like it at all because he didn’t want to lose his partner.
Hey Jude don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
Hey Jude don’t be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better
And anytime you feel the pain hey Jude refrain
Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Hey Jude don’t let me down
You have found her now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
So let it out and let it in hey Jude begin
You’re waiting for someone to perform with
And don’t you know that it’s just you
Hey Jude, you’ll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder
Hey Jude, don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you’ll begin to make it better
Better better better better better oh
Na na na na na na na, na na na na
Hey Jude

THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO.
It’s just the story of us getting married, going to Paris, going to Amsterdam, all that. It was very romantic.
Gibraltar was like a little sunny dream. I couldn’t find a white suit – I had sort-of off-white corduroy trousers and a white jacket. Yoko had all white on.
I wrote that in Paris on our honeymoon. It’s a piece of journalism. It’s a folk song. That’s why I called it ‘The Ballad Of…’
