Kevin Smith Instagram – My Mom has been in the hospital over a month now for what has been a harrowing series of medical emergencies that almost took from me and my family the most important and beloved person I’ve ever known. Elevated blood pressure and heart rate brought her in, which the doctors tried to control with drugs and fluids for 2 weeks. That’s when pneumonia crept in to complicate matters. Then Mom complained about a stomach ache, which turned out to be a perforated bowel, requiring emergency surgery to save her life. She was knocked out on Fentanyl for more than a week after that, during which they put 2 stents in her kidneys and gave her a tracheostomy to assist in her labored breathing. But through it all, the 77 year old Amazing Grace fought for life and refused to succumb to her series of physical traumas. Yesterday, after over a month, they finally removed the feeding tube from her nose, putting her a giant step toward getting out and going home. And though it’s resulted in an almost adorable Munhkin-sounding voice, we’re hoping the trach tube gets removed next week, at which point she can be moved to a facility closer to home. Mom has been shockingly strong throughout her terrifying trial, so I had to share her delightful dance (shot by @virginia_in_vienna) celebrating the removal of the tube from her nose! Many thanks to the Floridian health care professionals – both the doctors and the nurses – who’ve worked so hard to keep my Mom on the sunny side of the ground! And while I’ve traveled to and from the Sunshine State tons of times in the last month to be there for and with Grace (including a trip with @harleyquinnsmith), my massive appreciation and all my love go out to my brother Don and my sister Virginia for their constant care and omnipresence at Mom’s bedside. I don’t wanna jinx it, but the prognosis is finally looking good for Mom – who just dreams of being back home with her kitty-cat, Princess. When she’s well enough to travel, you better believe we’re having a celebration for Amazing Grace at @smodcastlecinemas (including a screening of her favorite film, The Sound of Music)!
