Tomorrow would have been my mother’s 73rd birthday. She passed away 15 years ago, after a long struggle with breast and ovarian cancer. In June, I will be a month away from the age when she was diagnosed. I have had preventive surgeries to try to lessen chances but I continue to have check ups. My mom loved Hendrix. And would always sign her letters Kiss the Sky. It took on new meaning after she passed. Sending my love to those who have also lost loved ones and strength to those who are fighting at this very moment for their lives and the lives of those they love. And to other women, please take the time to look after yourself and go for your mammograms and blood tests or ultrasounds, particularly if you have a family history of cancer. Thinking of the young Iranians who have suffered eye injuries protesting the killing of Mahsa Amini, like @elahetavokolian14 and Zanier Tondro. Many survivors have lost sight in one or both eyes. It’s a reminder of the price young Iranians are paying in their struggle for rights and freedoms.

Children are testifying to horrific levels of torture while in detention in Iran.
“They gave us electric shocks, hit me in my face with a gun, gave electric shocks to my back and beat me on my feet, back and hands with batons. They threatened that if we told anyone, they would [detain us again], do even worse and deliver our corpses to our families.”
Every child has the right to express their view on all matters affecting them (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child). Release children detained for peaceful protest.

I’m starting something new today—a collective where everyone can create.
Atelier Jolie is a place for creative people to collaborate with a skilled and diverse family of expert tailors, pattern makers and artisans from around the world. It stems from my appreciation and deep respect for the many tailors and makers I’ve worked with over the years, a desire to make use of the high-quality vintage material and deadstock fabric already available, and also to be part of a movement to cultivate more self-expression.
I’m looking forward to growing this with you.
More soon.

I’ve had the privilege of meeting refugees around the world for decades. I’m angry about the lessening in aid and compassion towards them. But I am always moved and inspired by their strength and warmth. They are the best of us, face to face with the worst of us.

Asia Abdelmajid was killed in Khartoum yesterday, one of the many Sudanese people who have died or been wounded in the last three weeks.
The people of Sudan have tried again and again to have a transition to civilian rule and stability and freedoms in their country. What is now happening to them – again – is a tragedy. I hope people listen to the voices of the Sudanese people themselves about what is needed. And while emergency relief must come, it should never – as often happens – be in place of the larger discussion about what is needed to end the conflict and help the people to stabilize their country, and the role that many countries have had and continue to have in the suffering of the people.
Sudanese people are making extraordinary efforts to help each other, and to get vulnerable families to safety. Please visit the link in my bio to learn more.

I wanted to share these photos and stories sent to me by some of the 300 female volunteers with @the_whitehelmets in #Syria. They identify unexploded bombs, carry out search and rescue operations to save victims of bombings and the recent earthquake, treat the injured and run health centers, working alongside their male colleagues.
Being denied rights doesn’t stop women from doing everything they can to protect others. Across the world women are fighting for their lives and families. More support for them, stronger responses to violence against them, leads to a more stable and just world.

Bee populations are under threat across the globe due to non-sustainable agriculture practices, climate change, habitat destruction and biodiversity erosion.
Pollinator dependent crops contribute to 35% of global crop production volume. If the precious pollinators, especially bees, disappeared from nature, 75% of all cultivated plants and 90% of wild flowering plants that depend on pollinators would be threatened.
On World Bee Day, I am happy to help raise awareness on the importance of this precious pollinator. By protecting the bee, we’re helping to protect traditional local knowledge, preserve biodiversity, and ensuring the future of communities around the world.

More information about the bees can be found in the Assessment Report on Pollinators, Pollination and Food production by IPBES. Link in my bio.
