Jennie Jacques Instagram – Lorna is looking for a wedding 💒 venue & she’s drawn to an old Cornish mansion, “Black Rabbit Hall.” Rob (fiancé) ain’t so keen – “doesn’t even have a wedding licence” – disguising his logic as reasoning; the man’s gut’s screaming no 😱 Lorna, however, will not let go. She even returns to stay there alone & the question is, why? #bookreview #bookstagram #bookrecommendations Lorna, feels like she’s been here before… Perhaps she has? 👻 The only people inside are an old lady called Mrs Alton – an ancient black widow🕷️ desperate to keep the ruins afloat – & her helper, Dill, similar age to Lorna… It all feels uneasy, perturbed… restless? Like there’s an itch that needs to be scratched. * The story flicks back & forth between the past & present, sort of like a modern day light 💡 switch; very easy to keep up with. ⬆️ The chapters alternate between a young girl called Amber re-telling her “childhood” at Black Rabbit Hall & our protagonist Lorna (early 30’s) who is staying in the house 🏡 while she trials out the “bridal suite.” There is a surprising coming-of-age feel to it; but with the sudden death of Amber’s mother & later her baby brother, her teen years go dark quickly… 👻 Unprecedented twists & turns, skeletons in the closet & somewhere something raw (or rotting?) to be exposed. * Well developed characters of various ages & spectacular writing – poetic yet linear. LOVE this book 📖 Family toxicity, loyalty, blood vs water, mental health & death… once again grief poaches centre stage but within this novel plagued by great loss there’s something to be gained.
