When in Barcelona…
Had so much fun on stage with @Springsteen, Patti, and Kate! 🎶
Happy Mother’s Day! 💕
Being a mom to Malia and Sasha has been the greatest gift of my life, and I am forever grateful to my mom for teaching me the importance of courage, empathy, and hard work—lessons that I’ve passed down to my own girls.
To all the moms out there, I hope you continue to kindle and nurture your bright light. Have a wonderful day.

The Light We Carry special is now streaming on @Netflix! Are you watching today?
In this clip, Oprah teases me about how many close friends I have—apparently 12 is too many! But for me, it’s just the right amount. The importance of friendship is just one of the topics @Oprah and I discuss during The Light We Carry Netflix Special—we also dig into what it means to build lasting relationships among other topics.
I hope you’ll tune in! When you watch, tell me what you think using #TheLightWeCarry. I can’t wait to hear from you!
Harry Belafonte was a barrier-breaking legend who used his platform to lift others up. He lived a good life—transforming the arts while also standing up for civil rights. And he did it all with his signature smile and style. Michelle and I send our love to his wife, kids, and fans.
When my girls were younger, no choice felt more important than the quality of the food and drinks I gave them. I constantly found myself wishing there were more healthy options available for moms like me. That’s a big part of the reason why I worked so hard as First Lady to help kids and families eat better and lead healthier lives.
We made some incredible progress during those years, but today, our kids continue to face a generational health crisis. There’s a lot of work left to do.
I’ve learned that if you want to change the game on this issue, you can do a lot from the outside. But to achieve the kind of long-term change our kids deserve, you’ve also got to change the food and beverage industry itself. You’ve got to get inside.
That’s exactly what I’m doing.
I’m proud to announce the national launch of a new company called @PLEZiNutrition—and I’m thrilled to be serving as a Co-Founder and Strategic Partner. Our goal isn’t just to provide healthy drinks and snacks for kids, but to jumpstart a race to the top that will transform the entire food industry. We want to be a partner that parents can count on, lead with our values, and drive the kind of change I’ve always hoped to see.
Our first product is a drink called PLEZi for kids ages 6-12. We chose to start with a kids’ drink because, on average, kids are consuming 53 pounds of added sugar per year. And sugar-sweetened beverages are the leading source of that added sugar.
Make no mistake, water and milk are the best options for your kids. And kids shouldn’t be regularly drinking anything other than water or milk until they’re at least five years old. But once kids become school-aged, drinking only water and milk isn’t a reality. Nearly two-thirds of young people are consuming sugary drinks on any given day.
We simply need a better option for kids and parents. That’s why PLEZi has less sugar, less sweetness, and more nutrients like fiber and potassium than you’ll find in many drinks out there. And the best part? It tastes delicious. But this is about far more than a kids drink. It’s about building a healthier generation of children. If you’re interested in learning more, check out Plezi.com.

Child marriage is one of the greatest threats to girls’ education and empowerment worldwide. A new report from @UNICEF shows how overlapping crises—from global conflict to the COVID-19 pandemic—threaten the progress made on this issue in recent years. They project that at the current rate, the world is still 300 years away from ending child marriage.
We started the @GirlsOpportunityAlliance at the @ObamaFoundation because we deeply believe that every girl deserves to live a life worthy of her dreams. That is only possible in a world without child marriage. We can’t afford to wait another minute—let alone three centuries—for this practice to end. We have to do our part to help end it now.
Read UNICEF’s new report using the link in my bio—and together, let’s recommit to doing what we can to ensure every girl gets the chance to live a life worthy of her dreams.

If we’re trying to get through a tough stretch—whether that’s a couple days or a couple years—one of the most important tools we’ve got is other people.
In the latest episode of The Light Podcast, I’m talking with the one and only @Oprah. Oprah and I have known each other since she showed up on my doorstep when my husband was running for Senate. In the time since, she’s become a friend, a mentor, and a guide. She constantly encourages me to use my voice—and my light—to help others find theirs.
As you will hear in this episode, she always, ALWAYS delivers. Take a listen to our conversation of #TheLightPodcast now on @Audible and hear us talk more about the ways we can make relationships endure, foster connections that last, and the importance of still going high when others go low.

In #TheLightWeCarry, I share the story of the time when my mom insisted it was time for me to walk to and from elementary school all by myself. I was in kindergarten then, around five years old, and I couldn’t help but ask myself, “Did she really believe I could walk to school alone?”
My mom understood the importance of setting aside her fears and allowing me the power of my own competence. And because she had faith in me, I had faith in me, too. As scared as I was, I felt a sense of pride and independence, which became important building blocks in my foundation as an independent human being.
You can read more about decoding fear in my book, The Light We Carry, and once you do, go ahead and share your favorite lessons that your mother or mother-figures in your life taught you in the comments.
Spending time with young people always fills me with so much hope. I absolutely loved meeting these bright students from @CultureForOne while looking at artwork by Mark Bradford!
Meet Beverly — a switchboard operator at The Pierre Hotel in New York. Every day, Beverly, her colleagues, and working class people across the country go to their jobs to give their all while building a life for themselves — and often, for those they love.
It makes me think of my father, a working class man who constantly made sacrifices for our family. He taught me about hard work and the inherent value that we all bring to this world.
In Working: What We Do All Day — our latest documentary series from @HigherGroundMedia streaming now on Netflix — @BarackObama sits down with individuals across industries to understand their jobs, their connection to work, and explore what motivates them. It is a deeply moving project that speaks to how we treat each other and the dignity of purpose. I hope that you will tune in.
Congratulations to the graduating class of @Columbia and @UChicago #ObamaScholars! 🎉
I’m so excited to see the impact you’ll continue to make in the years to come.
Ahead of #MothersDay, I wanted to tell you about Whitney and her mom, Anna. When Anna was 10-years-old, she was married because her family couldn’t afford for her to remain at home, and she was unable to finish school. Devastated, she vowed to never let that happen to her own daughter.
When Whitney turned 10, her family began talking about getting her married, too. But Anna stepped in and made sure her daughter didn’t have to endure the same fate she did. Her determination to champion her daughter’s pursuit of education led Whitney to seek a scholarship from @AkiliDada, an organization we support through the Girls Opportunity Alliance. Thanks to her mother’s support and the scholarship, Whitney was able to stay in school and break the cycle of child marriage in her family.
Today, Whitney is 20 years old and is starting college and dreams of becoming an accountant. Like every girl, Whitney deserves to live a life worthy of her dreams—and that’s only possible in a world without child marriage.
That’s why the @GirlsOpportunityAlliance, @ClooneyFoundationforJustice, @GatesFoundation, Girls First Fund, @GirlsNotBrides_, and @VowForGirls are working together to address this critical issue. Right now, more than 12 million girls around the world marry as children each year. As Whitney’s story shows, giving girls the chance to invest in their education and their dreams helps to create a brighter future–and I hope you’ll join us in this work by supporting organizations like Akili Dada at the link in my bio.
Let me tell you a little bit about Raven Smith, a young woman who is working to spread pride and positivity in my hometown of Chicago.
While in high school, Raven launched @StraightfromtheGO – an organization uplifting Chicago, one t-shirt at a time. Wanting to change the conversation around gun violence in Chicago, she organized a peace walk with students at her high school and local police officers. She then donated a portion of all proceeds from these shirts to support families of fallen first responders and victims of gun violence. Her fearlessness is a shining example of how we can all become changemakers in our communities.
This past weekend, she graduated from The University of Missouri in Columbia with a degree in textile apparel management. I’m just so proud of her. Good luck on the next chapter of your journey, Raven! 🎓
