Sadly missing Cannes this year. Sometimes people seem to forget that it is a festival of films and not of clothes! Considering I can’t show you the amazing films I watched or the conversations I have had or take you back in time when Manto premiered there. Here are a few images through the years in Cannes. And only the ones in Saris as there is a fair amount of chatter about the ‘celebrities who wore saris in Cannes’. Well it is surely my go-to garment. Simple, elegant and Indian. Least fussy – easy to get in and get out of it!
Each of the images have an interesting story behind it but too long to share. So feel free to make up your own story from the photos you see. And guess the year they are from – 2005, 20013, 2016-2018!

Today I am remembering Manto and Safia, who share their birthdays with each other. I am grateful to the family – their three daughters and to Zakia khala, Safia’s sister. Many of their stories found their way into the script. The family is very dear to me.
The journey of making Manto impacted me so deeply that I wrote an entire book. My one and only yet. It chronicles the journey of making the film. But it is more than that. Wish I could narrate it in an audiobook. I would love to live that time again!
PS. Sorry Manto Sahab and Safia bibi for referring to you both by your first name, but then, I knew you as my characters first! Hope you liked seeing yourself in Nawaz and Rasika!
I sure did.
Janamdin Mubarak!

Ms. Miso following me around. She has the best life. I have so much work today and all I want to do is just be, and do nothing. Like her.

Today is Mrinal da’s centenary. Wish he was there to celebrate it. Recently, I did an interview about him and thought will share parts of it here. He meant a lot to me and I miss him immensely.

Happy to share that I will be part of the main jury at the Shanghai International Film Festival, from 9th to 18th June. Curious to experience the city and the festival. I love jury duties as sharing and hearing thoughts on films often end up being about life and different experiences each one has had. This will be my first time as a juror in an Asian country. Excited!
