The time to eliminate caste discrimination in the state of California is now! “We speak for the employees who have raised this issue to HR and who were turned away at companies like Google and Cisco, because they were told caste is not covered. We speak for our children who want to be free from caste. And most importantly we speak for ourselves, as we want to heal from the trauma of caste. But we cannot heal if we do not have a remedy for this discrimination. And though we have faced violence and bigotry, we meet our opponents with love and empathy for we only want to make California safer for all its residents, including them.”

Today, California chose to lead the nation in caste equity by advancing SB 403. With a 34-1 vote, the California Senate passed SB 403–the landmark bill that would ban caste-based discrimination. With California’s historic win on the forefront of our minds, we want to take some time to extend our gratitude to the caste abolitionist civil rights leaders who continue to inform our caste equity organizing efforts. Equality Labs and Californians for Caste Equity express special thanks to the courageous and indomitable Sri Guru Ravidass Sabhas that represent thousands of Dalits across the state! This includes Sri Guru Ravidassia Sabhas of Yuba city, Fresno, Rio Linda, Union City/Bay Area, Salma, and Pittsburgh.
