Angelina Jolie Instagram – Southeast Asia is one of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth. The widespread use of snares is threatening the balance of this environment. Snares are animal traps shaped in the form of flexible noses made of cable, wire, or rope, and have caused a major decline in wildlife populations. Despite this there is some positive news to share. A Zero Snaring campaign was launched in Cambodia last year and has resulted in the removal of an estimated 40% of snares, and the confiscation of 50% of homemade guns, in protected areas like the one where my family has worked with a local team for over twenty years to try to slow deforestation and protect the forest and its wildlife. National NGOs in Ukraine have only received 0.003% of funds raised internationally. This model has to change to more direct support for local organizations. This strengthens civil society, gives more self-determination to local communities, and ensures all funds from donations go to support the local economy. Local organizations with teams from the communities they represent offer the most effective, dignified and sustainable way to support communities dealing with trauma and recovering from war, displacement and climate change. Here are a few: The Women’s March @marshzhinok is a Ukrainian feminist initiative founded by Olena Shevchenko. They run women-only shelters and provide humanitarian aid to women across Ukraine. Casers @helpukraine_team evacuates people via ambulance from front line and deoccupied territories. They do specialized evacuations of people with complex needs and also provide online doctors appointments and medical aid for isolated communities. GAR is a disability-led Ukrainian NGO supporting people with spinal cord injuries. They supply high performance wheelchairs and training to help those with spinal cord injuries regain independence.
