What is your body complex? Here is mine: All my life I have had a massive complex about my thighs. I grew up in Germany where thic thighs = you’re labelled as fat. I would hide them, I would try to squeeze them away, I would try to diet, to rub abrasive sponges over them. I tried almost anything to make them “skinny” and I would spend hours on sports tools trying to get rid of them. When I came to Japan it got worse. My manager at the time told me to diet them away. Even when I got under weight she would still complain about my thighs being fat (until my stylist said “she’s a foreigner she has a different physique”. ) I heard in the USA thighs were ok but not in the Germany I grew up in and especially not in Japan. Until a certain point in time, all anime featured skinny girls with beautiful skinny legs. That is why I tried not to wear too revealing clothes and cosplay characters where you could see thighs. I felt super self conscious about them, that’s why my fashion helped me hide them for years. I would wish back the days of Ranma 1/2, and other anime made in the 80s, when thighs had been more acceptable. That’s when Atelier Ryza, a game by Koei Techmo came onto the market and it became a game changer. Before that, thighs seemed to have been “niche” in Japan but this game brought the “base” to the table and the fan base with it. It went to become one of their most popular Atelier titles with 3 popular games. Today it got announced that Atelier Ryza is getting an anime adaptation and I’m thrilled!!! Especially recent posts I’ve been seeing on IG seem to show a trend to going back to skinny and “ditching the thighs and booty”. Posts like these made me worried for another Cathy somewhere having to go through the same pains as I did. Please remember, whatever body shape you have, you are beautiful and body shapes should NEVER be a fashion trend. We should know better than to beat our bodies to being something they are not. Here’s the story: This is our first snap result from the 2023 Ask Japanese Cherry Blossom 🌸 Photoshoot and by now it’s become a real tradition. I remember when the director and I were just fresh colleagues and did our first Sakura shoot in Tokyo. He was just learning how to do portrait pictures and not flower pictures. I was learning how to pose and I remember desperately trying not get my first few brand dresses dirty while shooting 😂 I think I tuned a pair of brand new shoes but thinking about it now, it was worth it. This year I realise it’s become a tradition to try shoot Harajuku fashion pictures underneath the cherry blossoms in Japan. I’m grateful I got the chance again to do it this year. The dress I am wearing has significance for me too, it was one of the first brand dresses a friend in the UK allowed me to borrow for a shoot. It was the first dress that gave me confidence to wear pink. Until then I had always thought I would looks stupid in it. Once I came to Japan I found the same dress a few years later, now I own it and can wear it for shoots in Japan. I was kinda moved realising how this very dress has meant a lot to me over the years, same with the photoshoot. I hope this spring Sakura Photoshoot tradition can continue for many years, as we learn and grow. It’s sometimes good to stop and reflect on what we have, and never get number by routines. Do you know what a Japanese “Daruma” doll is? You see a big one in the pictures but what are they? These dolls are a symbol of good luck and fortune. Before displaying them, the owner colors in one eye and makes a wish. When the wish comes true, the second eye is coloured in. For some it’s also a reminder of your own life goals. Gunma Prefecture (where we shot the recent hot spring video) is famous for making these daruma dolls. They had a gigantic Daruma displayed at the new Matoi Hostel and Bar when we went to shoot there.
