When I was young, I used to get laughed at for saying that I wanted to play cricket for India. Nobody believed me, except my father. I think he was the only person who would encourage my brother and I to go out there and break windows. He absolutely loved playing sports, having been a former volleyball and basketball player himself. He always told me to keep playing despite it being such a stereotype where I come from. He encouraged me to go shoulder-to-shoulder with the boys of the village and I never shied away. He’s the reason I took up cricket, and he’s the reason I could dream of becoming the Indian captain. This was the story of my sporting hero. Now I want to know yours. It was truly an enriching experience to be a part of such an amazing panel and have a meaningful discussion on a topic that is really close to my heart – ‘Reimagining gender equality for women in small town India’. I was truly amazed to learn that Whisper Menstrual Health & Hygiene Program has educated over 2 crore girls on puberty & hygiene over last two years. I think, self-belief is very important. Whatever you do, when you know you are doing the right work, then you do not need to listen to others. When I started playing cricket, people started asking me “Why not try another sport? Why cricket? You are such a good athlete you can play any sport.” I think if you believe in yourself then you can achieve what you really wanted. It is important to show the people that belief so they start trusting in their dreams. This is what makes us #Unique and #United to be able to drive an important change in society.
