Come and talk to me😏
My girl @jenjphoto always gets me together! Jodeci was on at this very moment & I’m classy, but also a riot. I don’t know how she got me to stand still. 🙈#atoasttoblackhollywood @missdiddy #betawards #thebrandgroup

I don’t think I’ve ever shared this photo. I always found it slightly ironic and morbid to see myself as a child “burying” my dad. It’s been 9 years. June is always a lot for me. Dr. Larry B passed June 7th, my birthday is June 9th, and then Father’s Day sneaks up. I’ve been an emotional soul today which isn’t always me. I tested for a role a few months ago and the show runner tried so hard to pull my vulnerability to the surface. Even when I feel open, I close a lot off. I’m like a gummy bear you left on the counter for a year. You expect it to be soft until you chew on it. BRB gonna google how to soften a hardened gummy bear to complete this analogy. I’m back! The internet says: the microwave, soaking, or bread. I don’t know what to do with that. Anyway, I don’t just miss my dad, I wonder how not having him affects the kind of person I am. I feel robbed of his guidance. I’m the only girl amongst my siblings. I’m sad and maybe avoiding not having him to walk me down an aisle. To dance with. Everyone has “dad stuff”. I know I’m no anomaly. That’s why I’m sharing. To connect with whoever you are and whatever you felt today. These holidays are a blessing, and can also take a toll. I pray the sensitive energy these holidays bring lasts longer than one day because it connects us and I like that.

At the Getty museum in the bathroom. I walk into a stall. Two teens dressed in white stand in the mirror. One stands in profile and says, “here’s the thing…” She goes on to berate her own body… The other girl stands facing the mirror and watches silently. I come out of the restroom stall and they both sneak looks at me. I can feel their younger presence and energy. I remember being them. Seeing someone older and maybe cooler. Confident and self-assured. Wondering if it was what they were wearing. Imagining who they were in the world. Little do they know I’m still like them. I went with the illusion and became a living art piece. I washed my hands and dried them with ease. Took one brief look in the mirror, content with what I saw, and sauntered out of the bathroom.
These are images (by @themakalalee) from my second opportunity to direct. When it comes to acting and directing I have not experienced a typical acting or film school education. In my acting, what I’ve learned is that experience can be the greatest teacher. Both in life and on set. Sometimes you need an opportunity to try something, try again and try again to discover the best ways in which to do the thing. Isn’t that what life is anyway? I’m grateful to @lolnetwork & particularly @thairandolph for extending this second invitation for me to be a part of directing a digital branding campaign. I never thought I would be interested in directing commercials, but being invited on allowed me to try something new, and I loved it. When I directed for the first time with #WomenWriteNow, I wanted to succeed more than anything. I traveled across the country to shadow a director, sought mentorship, took a Sundance Collab course, read books, took an ASC masterclass, flew home to GA to research, and worked my ass off in prep. During our two day shoot I was focused. I had fun (I will always have fun), but one of my regrets was that I didn’t laugh enough and that maybe my cast and crew didn’t laugh enough… “Enough” to me is hearing a laugh every three minutes MINIMUM. I promised myself that the next time I would truly enjoy the people I was around because it’s all “make believe”, but the lives & the moments are real. This industry can be taxing, so if you’re not enjoying your days, it can eat you alive. It has been such a blessing to learn in this way. Through experience. Every opportunity will teach me something new. One of my mentors said, it’s great you want to study everything, but the way you will ultimately learn is by doing. I’ve had this dream on my heart to direct since I was a kid, and like with acting I believe in God’s timing and that the right projects and people will find me. I know when God places something on my heart, it is my task to nurture it. I hope to continue to grow through this with much grace and gratitude. Thank you @iloveantrose for welcoming me on so effortlessly and for your insight to curate a crew of all women. #gillettevenus #lolnetwork
