Taylor Rees Instagram – “When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven” – Harriet Tubman reflecting on the day she escaped slavery, alone, making it 90 miles driven by the sheer determination to be free or to die. She then made 19 trips over 10 years to help free hundreds of other enslaved people. She “never lost a single passenger” as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. ~ On March 10th, the women of Auburn and Syracuse NY @girltrek chapters, alongside founders @vanessatreks @morgantreks gathered to celebrate Harriet Tubman and honor her legacy through the liberatory practices of walking, wellness, and sisterhood. With us that day was Harriet’s living descendants including her 85 year old great great grandniece Mother Pauline Copes-Johnson, pictured first. ~ To this day, as we know, the impacts of slavery are well and alive – existing within the perpetuating systems of oppression but also in bodies and psyches, showing up as disease and stress and shorter life spans for black women. So @girltrek intends to change that, now. By facilitating community walking groups and making wellness and self-care and thus self-liberation so accessible to over one million black women, I have no doubt they will achieve their goal, ultimately laying a foundation and railroad that helps to create liberation for all. After a day apart, the purrs turn to songs, the way loves finds a way to turn our longing into a melody.
