Tazbah Chavez Instagram – My Grandma Thelma passed this week. As a kid, I would watch her wrap her bee hive hair into a scarf at night, while she removed her face with cremes and went to sleep next to her and some stuffed animals on nice pillow cases. Me and my sister have her nails. I drank a lot of Tang and ate a lot of bologna sandwiches on Wonder Bread with Miracle Whip at her kitchen table, and swung many days away on a rope outside in her red rock yard in Ft. Defiance. One of my favorite things as a kid was to run between her house and my great grandma Rose’s house right across the drive way, I’d always come back with a box of raisins in my pocket and we’d eat them in the yard. As I got older, she would pass on a piece of her jewelry to me here and there — her opal bracelets are something I consciously wear every time I feel I need some courage, confidence and protection. She’s one of the many Tótsohníí women I come from, and although she lived a long life, her absence today feels intergeneration-ally profound. My mother has lost both her parents in the last few months, and us grandkids lost our last living grandparent. For us, that generation has gone onward and we remain here as the things they prayed for. There’s always so many questions I’d have loved to ask them, but I’m grateful for the memories she wrapped me in and my love for her and all of my grandparents for enduring what they did so I could be here is endless. ❤️🪶 | Posted on 24/Feb/2023 23:20:27
