Sikkim claims to be a carbon-neutral state and is on its way to achieving a carbon-negative stance.

While India plans for Net Zero by 2070, Sikkim plans to achieve even more and is introducing various pioneering programmes for the same.

“We want to declare Sikkim as Green State and PM Narendra Modi has set a target for Net Zero by 2070, but Sikkim is already carbon neutral, and we are trying to achieve carbon negative. To achieve the same, we have started working, and we want the central government to declare Sikkim as a green state as we are already a carbon-neutral state, and we are expecting that. For the same forest department has flung into action so we are organizing a series of programs to achieve the same”, Karma Loday Bhutia, Sikkim Forest Minister, was quoted as saying by India Today NE.

At the centre of programmes introduced by the government is “Mero Rukh Mero Santati” (My Tree My Child), which entails planting 100 trees for every newborn baby in Sikkim.

This aims to strengthen the age-old bond between society and nature, creating an ecosystem where both trees and children can thrive.

ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, gram panchayats, urban local bodies, and department staff are to assist in onboarding the parents.

The program allows for planting trees on private land, community land, or nearby forests, providing flexibility to parents.

The forest minister added, “One of the first such programs in the Eastern Himalayas and since after its official launch in Environment day we have over 5000 registration and Sikkim being least population density it is a huge number and if this trend continues then Sikkim will be able to plant more trees which will also help to attain Carbon Negative aim.”
