This post seems to have resonated in ways I hadn’t quite anticipated, so a few thoughts:
I’ve overseen comment sections on this page that have made me proud to know y’all. But when it comes to politics… I’ve also seen it get emotional. In a toxic way. Which I get. But I didn’t want to suck anyone (least of all myself) into checking a comment section all day that wasn’t ultimately going to be healthy or useful. And like I said, WE shouldn’t be debating (at least on here) the candidates should be.
Second: We’re all in this together. I’m simply pro-democratic process. I hope the RNC has a debate as well. Debates take decisions and discussions out of the back rooms and into our living rooms, and it’s important to allow new ideas to come to the forefront.
Third: I’ve been accused of being very hard on ‘ol Joe. I’m just looking at a guy who has aged a lot since that fantastic Colbert appearance he made the year he decided NOT to run. The change is undeniable. Question is: Is the man up to the task? To be one of two choices for possibly the most demanding, most important job in the world? It is OUR job to determine this. And to do that, we need more than just a press conference where he gets the questions in advance. I’ll cop to letting some of my anger come through upon finding out just how incapacitated Sen Diane Feinstein is, for how long it’s been going on, and how many steps were taken to hide it from voters. But mental acuity is a valid concern – one that, btw, could be erased by a strong debate performance. And… if standing up for your record, addressing ideas from within your own party, and sharing your vision for the future is going to HURT you? It begs the question: Are you REALLY the strongest candidate?
But it any case… this is a decision to be made by US.
