Tom Hornbein died early this morning at his home. He lived for 92 years and had an immense impact on the lives of a great many people, including me. He was a remarkable man. I am so grateful to have had him as a mentor, a role model, and a dear friend. At the moment, however, I’m mostly just very sad that he’s gone. These photos show him on the summit of Devils Tower in 2010 when he was 79, climbing in Colorado at 81, and at his home in Estes Park six days ago.

This is Chris McCandless when he was 12. Do you wonder why so many people hate him (and/or why they hate me for writing a book about him)? Hit the link in my profile to listen to a podcast that discusses this in fascinating detail. Photo courtesy of Chris’ sister @carinemccandless, whose excellent book, THE WILD TRUTH, is a big part of the podcast.
Yvon Chouinard climbing ice the old-school way: With a single 70-cm classic piolet and no harness. I shot this while climbing with Yvon in Hyalite Canyon in 1986. I will be interviewing him on the main stage at the Santa Fe International Literary Festival @sfinternationallitfest on Sunday evening May 21. I’m very stoked about this. Hope you can be there.

Woke up at zero dark thirty this morning and rambled into the high country to watch the sunrise light up the Continental Divide. I’m continually grateful that I live in a corner of the American West where there’s an abundance of accessible public land close at hand. It brings me a lot of joy and peace. I can’t believe how fortunate I am.

I ran into a whole lot of my elk buddies at 12,000 feet in the Indian Peaks Wilderness this morning. They were chillin’ in their usual spot
Went meadow skipping this morning before chaining myself to my desk. The weather gods delivered 10 inches of powder for Tax Day.

Celebrated Juneteenth this morning with a long, lovely ride through the high country. The snowpack is looking pretty good!

Don’t forget that An Accidental Life— a powerful, heartbreaking, ultimately uplifting documentary about my astonishing friend Quinn Brett—will be available for streaming on July 11 on all the usual platforms. If you pre-order it July 6 through July 9 you can buy it for the flash-sale price of $6.99. @quinndalina was speed climbing El Capitan in 2017 when she fell 120 feet and smashed onto a ledge. “I awoke in a hospital bed, paralyzed from the waist down,” Quinn explains. “My partner Josie McKee and fellow climbing rangers saved my life. Some of the best neurosurgeons in the country have said it was among the worst spinal injuries they’ve seen…. I hope this film—a deep view into my shattered spine, yet complete human spirit—inspires us all to seek the miracles we have yet to create.” Hit link in my profile to stream it.

A friendly neighbor showed up for a visit this evening
September is my favorite month. @bequitahall took me on an 8-hour ramble along this stretch of the Continental Divide today. Wish @charley.mace could have joined us.
