I have been visiting survivors of the earthquake, like Samir Mohammed Ajjar, who was rescued in the 296th hour after the disaster. He survived beneath the rubble with his wife for almost 13 days before they were rescued—devastatingly, his children did not pull through. I also visited with Nurhan, a 46 year old woman with a new heart valve who has been having trouble getting necessary medicine to maintain the valve since the earthquake. Today, the valve sounds crisp – a good sign!

I have traveled to the site of the earthquake in Turkey to meet with volunteers, first responders, and hospitals to help identify key needs on the ground as they evolve. Here in the port city of Iskenderun on the Mediterranean, there are ships equipped to be hospitals that are taking care of the injured.
I visited the pediatric ward in Adana, which has already performed almost 1000 limb amputations, including one for 12 year old Semih Bilgili. His father was pulling him to safety when a beam fell, severing his arm and killing his father. I met with Semih and his mother, Zeliha. Semih’s main request was a soccer ball—it’s a major breakthrough for an amputee to want to be active again!

Frontline workers are scarred by hearing the voices of those waiting to be rescued—while many are saved, not all can be pulled out in time. The Hatay Greater City Hospital looks fine from the outside, but inside the facility is completely collapsed, leaving patients without care. @samaritanspurse stepped in, providing a tent hospital with 100 beds for at least the next 2 months, as they are also doing in Ukraine. Their professional team of doctors, nurses, and staff jumped in quickly to save lives and help those suffering.

Her friends, family, and especially our shared grandchildren will always remember Nada’s incredible warmth and love. It was a joy seeing her in her element, bustling around the kitchen preparing wonderful meals, or spending time with the kids playing their favorite games. Nada raised a wonderful man who I am incredibly proud to have as my son in law. She will be sorely missed. #RIP

They understand the challenges youth face growing up in America today & support our innovative health & wellness curriculum by funding the training of more young adults to mentor thousands of teens across the country.
Last week, I spoke to the Opal Group with undefeated MMA fighter Daniel Puder of @mylifemypower about their successful education model, which keeps at-risk teens in school and out of jail. We need programs like Daniel’s and @healthcorps, which has helped millions of teens thrive, to support our nation’s next generation. @miketyson supports these programs because of the positive impact that mentorship has had on his life.
