Angela Lewis Instagram – Only befitting that we would officially hang our original MARIO MOORE @mariomooreart LIGHTNESS IN DARK on #juneteenth. This piece comes from Mario’s most recent MIDNIGHT CANAAN Exhibition @davidkleingallery in Detroit, MI. The series highlights Detroit’s Underground Railroad history. The centerpieces of Midnight and Canaan focus on Lucie and Thornton Blackburn, two Black anti-slavery activists who escaped to Windsor through Detroit in 1833. “Midnight” was Detroit’s codename, and “Canaan” was Windsor’s. Second Baptist Church served as a central hub to the Underground Railroad. I remember vividly exploring the church and museum as a child and imagining the spirits that flowed through to freedom. I even served as a ring boy in a wedding in this church. Also was the church of @luvangelalewis mother and grandmother. Only right for this to be our first original of Mario’s! #history #detroit #freedom
